Product description

The amber plastic medicine bottle with a capacity of 50 ml and a fitted pump is a ready-made packaging solution for serums, face and body oils, fluid emulsions and light creams, which are dispensed in small amounts without opening the bottle. The bottle is made of PET, so it is light and will not break. The amber colour filters light and helps protect contents that are sensitive to oxidation, such as vegetable oils or vitamin serums. The black and gold glossy pump with a clear overcap gives the packaging a finish that lets the product go straight onto the counter.

The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. The certificate for direct contact with food applies to the bottle alone; the pump does not have it, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetic products.

What the set is suitable for

Each full press of the head dispenses approximately 0.3 ml of the contents, which corresponds to a common dose of face serum or oil. The packaging is therefore particularly suitable for:

  • face serums – water-based and oil-based serums, active concentrates, serums with hyaluronic acid or niacinamide;
  • face and body oils – blends of vegetable oils, beard oils, massage oils in travel packaging;
  • fluid emulsions and lotions – light creams that flow freely;
  • liquid hair products – hair-end oils, light leave-in serums.

With thick creams, butters or gels with high viscosity, the pump may have trouble drawing in the contents. Check how your specific formulation behaves in the pump before filling a larger number of bottles.

How the pump works

The pump is screwed onto the bottle and sealed by the thread. It draws in the contents through a dip tube that reaches the bottom of the bottle. The clear overcap covers the head and protects it from dust and from accidental pressing during transport or in a handbag. Before first use, the head usually needs to be pressed several times until the tube fills and the contents start to come out. The body of the pump combines plastic (PP) and aluminium.

A small residue of the contents always remains below the opening of the tube and cannot be dispensed by pressing. Take this into account when determining the declared filling quantity.

Capacity and filling

The nominal capacity of 50 ml is the quantity the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The physical capacity up to the brim of the neck is larger. This difference is a reserve for the dip tube of the pump, which takes up part of the space after screwing on, and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. The bottle is therefore filled up to the nominal capacity, not to the brim, otherwise the contents would be pushed out through the neck after the pump is fitted.

The bottle is made of PET and deforms with heat. Let hot emulsions cool before filling and do not pour anything into it directly from a water bath.

Good to know

  • Preparation before filling – wash the bottle and the pump before first use, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Residual water in the tube would dilute the contents and needlessly introduce water into anhydrous oils.
  • Reuse – once empty, the bottle can be washed and used again. The pump is cleaned by pumping warm water through it, but oil residues are harder to remove from the mechanism, so when changing the contents it is better to use a new pump.
  • Chemical resistance – PET is not intended for aggressive chemicals. It normally tolerates cosmetic serums, oils and emulsions. With a high proportion of essential oils, alcohol or other solvents, test in a single bottle how the material of the bottle, the seal and the surface of the pump behave after longer contact.
  • Other closures – other closures with the same neck type from the Handymade range also fit the bottle. When making your own combination, check the tightness and the behaviour with your specific formulation.
  • Recycling – the bottle belongs in plastic waste. The pump combines plastic with aluminium; separate it from the bottle before disposal.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 50 ml plastic medicine bottle with pump suitable for face serum?
Yes, the packaging is designed precisely for serums and similar liquid cosmetic products. The pump dispenses approximately 0.3 ml per press, which is a common dose of face serum. The amber bottle also filters light, so it is suitable for serums with vitamin C, retinol or plant extracts, which lose effectiveness in light.
Can I fill the plastic medicine bottle with pump with thick cream?
A thick cream or butter generally cannot be dispensed through this pump. The mechanism is built for serums, oils and liquid emulsions, which the tube draws in easily. With a creamy consistency, the pump either does not draw in the contents or dispenses uneven doses. It is better to pack thicker products in jars or containers.
Why is the 50 ml plastic medicine bottle not filled to the brim?
The bottle is filled to the nominal capacity of 50 ml because the space above it is a reserve for the dip tube of the pump and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. After the pump is screwed on, the tube takes up part of the volume. If the bottle were filled to the neck, the contents would overflow during closing and the pump would not seal properly.
Does the amber PET bottle protect the contents from light?
Partially. Amber PET lets through less light than clear plastic, so oils and light-sensitive active ingredients break down more slowly in it. However, it does not provide complete protection. Even in an amber bottle, the finished product should be stored away from direct sunlight, and the formulation should have its own preservative system and, where appropriate, an antioxidant.
Is the bottle and pump set also suitable for food?
The set as a whole is not approved for contact with food. The certificate for direct contact with food applies to the bottle alone; the pump does not have it. You should therefore use the bottle with the pump for cosmetic products, for which the set is declared as suitable. If you need packaging for edible oil or syrup, choose a bottle with a closure that also has the certificate.
How do I clean the pump for reuse?
Fit the pump onto a bottle with warm water and a drop of liquid soap, pump several times and rinse in the same way with clean water. Then let it dry completely with the head pressed down so that the water runs out of the tube. With oil contents, residues remain in the mechanism that water does not remove completely, so when changing the product a new pump is more suitable.
