Product description

The clear PET pharmaceutical bottle with a 50 ml capacity and a white lotion pump is intended for filling creams, face and body lotions, gels and thicker serums that are meant to be dispensed without unscrewing and without fingers touching the contents. The bottle is lightweight and does not break when dropped, which suits the bathroom, travel cosmetics and samples for customers. Through the clear wall you can see the colour and consistency of the contents and how much is left.

The set consists of two components: a PET bottle with an 18 mm thread and a polypropylene pump with a dip tube. Both are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products. Only the bottle has a separate certificate for direct food contact; the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.

What the set is suitable for

  • Face and body creams – thinner and medium-thick emulsions pass through the dip tube and the pump dispenses them evenly.
  • Lotions, serums and gels – the contents are drawn up from the bottom with each press and fingers do not touch them, so the product stays clean during use.
  • Hand creams and topical preparations – a small dose lets you measure out only the amount that is actually used.
  • Samples and test batches – at a volume of 50 ml you can try out a new recipe or hand out a smaller amount without a large packaging cost.

Dispensing and working with the pump

The pump works with a dip tube that reaches almost to the bottom of the bottle. Before first use, press the pump several times until the tube fills and the contents start to come out. One press releases approximately 0.14 ml. For an ordinary face or hand cream this is enough; for a body lotion you simply press several times.

It is worth checking in advance whether the pump suits your particular consistency. Very thick balms, butters or creams with a high proportion of wax are drawn up through the tube with difficulty or not at all. With very liquid contents the pump may dispense more than desired, and in that case a dropper or sprayer is more suitable.

Pour a thicker emulsion into the bottle while it is still lukewarm and has a lower viscosity, and fit the pump only after it has cooled completely. After screwing it on, prime the pump over a container and check that the contents come out smoothly.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. Physically, more fits in up to the neck, but this space is a reserve for the dip tube and the body of the pump and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. For this reason, fill only up to the nominal volume, never to the brim. If it is overfilled, part of the contents is pushed out through the thread after the pump is fitted and the closure does not seal.

Good to know

Clear PET does not provide protection from light. It suits contents that are not harmed by light, or products stored in a cabinet or box. For formulations with sensitive active ingredients, unstable oils or natural colorants, amber or blue glass is more suitable.

PET resists common cosmetic emulsions, both water-based and glycerine-based. For contents with a higher proportion of essential oils, alcohol or other solvents, we recommend filling one bottle as a trial and checking after several weeks whether the wall has become cloudy, softened or deformed. Hot filling is not suitable for PET; the contents should be at room temperature or slightly lukewarm at most before pouring.

Before first filling, wash and disinfect the bottle and the pump and let them dry completely. Residual moisture in the tube or on the bottle wall can dilute the first doses and put a strain on the preservative system.

The set can be reused if the pump is thoroughly rinsed with warm water and left to dry, including the tube. When changing the recipe, especially between an oil-based and a water-based formulation, it is safer to use a new pump. Closures with the same neck type and other ready-made bottle and closure combinations can be found in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness, dispensing and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

The bottle is made of PET and the pump of PP, so take them apart before recycling and sort them as plastic.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 50 ml plastic pharmaceutical bottle with a pump suitable for creams?
Yes, the set is intended precisely for creams, lotions and gels of medium thickness that can be drawn up through the dip tube and dispensed by the pump. Very thick balms or butters with a high proportion of wax come out through the pump with difficulty, and a jar is better for them. We recommend checking suitability for your particular consistency with one trial bottle.
Does the clear PET bottle protect the contents from light?
No, clear PET lets light through and does not protect the contents from it. It suits creams and lotions that are not harmed by light, or products stored in a cabinet or box. For formulations with sensitive active ingredients, oxidising oils or natural colorants, amber or blue glass is more suitable.
How much cream does the white 18 mm lotion pump dispense per press?
Approximately 0.14 ml per press. The actual dose depends on the thickness of the contents and on whether the tube is fully filled, which is why the pump should be pressed several times to prime it before first use. For body lotions, expect several presses; for a face cream, one or two are often enough.
Can the 50 ml plastic pharmaceutical bottle with a pump be filled to the brim?
No, the bottle is filled up to the nominal volume of 50 ml, not up to the neck. The space above this level is a reserve for the dip tube and the body of the pump and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. If it is overfilled, part of the contents is pushed out through the thread after the pump is screwed on and the set then leaks.
Is the bottle and pump set suitable for contact with food?
No, the set as a whole is not declared for food contact and is intended for cosmetics. Only the PET bottle has a separate certificate for direct food contact; the white lotion pump does not have this declaration. If you need packaging for food, choose a bottle with a closure that has a food-contact declaration.
Can I wash the lotion pump and use it again?
Yes, both the pump and the bottle can be reused after thorough cleaning. The pump must be rinsed with warm water, including the tube, disinfected and left to dry completely. When switching between an oil-based and a water-based formulation, a new pump is recommended, because residues in the tube are difficult to remove.
