Product description

You dispense a small amount of cream, gel or thicker serum with a single press straight from the packaging, without unscrewing it and without your fingers touching the contents. The amber PET bottle with a nominal volume of 10 ml and a black lotion pump is intended for travel-size packs, samples or testers, or for eye cream or a concentrated product applied in small amounts. Amber plastic reduces the amount of light reaching the contents and PET is lightweight, so the bottle also fits into a cosmetic bag for travel. The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics.

What the set consists of

  • Bottle – amber PET pharmaceutical bottle with a straight body, of European origin. “Pharmaceutical bottle” refers only to the shape of the packaging, not to its intended use.
  • Lotion pump – black polypropylene pump with a black top and a dip tube. A single press dispenses approximately 0.14 ml, which is enough for one application of eye cream or serum.

What it is suitable for

The lotion pump handles emulsions of creamy to medium-thick consistency and gels that can be drawn up through the tube. The bottle is therefore mainly filled with face and eye creams, thicker serums, tinted creams, hand creams in travel size or samples of your own formulation for customers. Very thick products such as butters, balms or thick masks cannot be drawn up by the pump. Thin, watery liquids such as toners are dispensed imprecisely and are better suited to a fine mist sprayer or a dropper.

Filling and preparation

Before the first filling, wash the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely. It is enough to pump the alcohol through the pump several times, rinse it with clean water and let it drain with the tube pointing downwards.

The dip tube is supplied longer than the height of the bottle. Before fitting it, shorten it with a diagonal cut so that it ends just above the bottom. The pump will then draw up even the last of the contents.

The bottle is filled up to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The space above it remains free for the tube with the pump mechanism and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. After screwing on the pump, prime it by pressing it several times until the tube fills and the pump begins to dispense even doses.

PET is commonly used for emulsions as well as water-based and oil-based products. For contents with a high proportion of pure essential oils or strong solvents, we recommend checking in advance how the packaging behaves with the specific formulation. The plastic and the pump seal may not withstand such contents in the long term.

Good to know

The amber tint reduces light but does not block it completely. Products containing light-sensitive ingredients, for example vitamin C or retinol, are better stored away from direct sunlight even in an amber bottle.

A lotion pump with a dip tube is not an airless system. With every press, air is drawn into the bottle to replace the dispensed amount. Water-based products therefore need effective preservation, just as they would in an open jar.

The set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. The bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food, but the lotion pump does not, so do not use the set for food.

After thorough washing, the packaging can be reused. The pump mechanism is harder to clean than the bottle. When changing the type of contents or if dried cream remains in the tube, it is better to replace it with a new one. The bottle is made of PET and the pump of PP; before recycling, separate them and sort each part according to its material.

Other closures with the same neck type, which you will find in the parameters, and ready-made bottle plus closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness, dispensing and behaviour of the packaging with the specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

How much cream does the lotion pump dispense per press?
A single press dispenses approximately 0.14 ml. This amount corresponds to one dose of eye cream or concentrated serum; for face creams, two to three presses are normally used. The actual volume of a dose also depends on the thickness of the product. Thick creams are pushed out more slowly by the pump and the dose may be slightly smaller.
Does the amber 10 ml PET bottle protect the contents from light?
Partially. Amber plastic reduces the amount of light reaching the contents and lessens its effect, but it still lets some light through, unlike fully opaque packaging. For products with light-sensitive ingredients, we therefore recommend storing them in the dark or in a box even in an amber bottle, especially if they are used over several weeks.
Is the bottle with a lotion pump suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is not intended for food. The amber 10 ml PET bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food; the lotion pump has no such assessment. Together they are therefore declared only as suitable for contact with cosmetics and you should not use them for food.
What products can be dispensed through a lotion pump with a dip tube?
Creams and emulsions of creamy to medium-thick consistency and gels are dispensed best. Very thick products, for example butters, balms or thick masks, cannot be drawn up by the tube. Thin watery liquids such as toners are dispensed imprecisely and drip, so a fine mist sprayer or a dropper is more suitable for them. Check how a new recipe behaves with a trial filling.
Why is the 10 ml plastic bottle not filled to the brim?
Above the nominal volume there must be room for the tube with the pump mechanism and for the expansion of the contents. The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed for under normal filling. If it is filled up to the neck, the contents will overflow after the pump is screwed on and may leak around the thread when the temperature changes.
Can the amber bottle with a lotion pump be reused?
Yes, it is enough to wash the bottle, disinfect it with alcohol and let it dry. Pump alcohol through the pump and rinse it with water, but its interior cannot be inspected. If dried cream remains in the tube or you are changing the type of contents, we recommend using a new pump and keeping the bottle.
