Give your lips nourishment and juice with a nourishing lip balm

Are you suffering from dry and chapped lips? A nourishing lip balm may be just the first help you need. The combination of plant oils, butters and wax will ensure that your lips are moisturised and nourished. Thanks to the practical form of the balm in a stick, you can apply this product more hygienically on the lips compared to a balm applied with the fingers. You will thus appreciate the nourishing lip balm not only at home, but also on the go.

LIP BALM - INGREDIENTS

The basis of the lip balm sticks is wax. In our case, beeswax was chosen, but later in the article you will also find out about possible alternatives. It's very easy to prepare a lip balm with emollient lecithin, so let's get started.

LIP BALM TREATMENT - TIPS AND TRICKS

Preparing a nourishing lip balm is really simple, but here are some tips and tricks to make lip balm making easier.

If you are using smaller lip balm tubes (about 4.5-5 ml) it is easier to prepare several tubes at once, as the quantities of ingredients for 1 tube will be difficult to weigh as they will be very small. So work with a batch of at least 15 g, which is enough for at least three tubes of approx. 5 ml.

When pouring the balm into the packaging, use a rubber band to tie the packaging together (i.e. bundle), this will make the balm easier to pour. If the balm should harden before pouring, simply reheat it, do not use unnecessarily high heat, a gradual warming on a water bath will suffice.

If a firmer lip balm is more to your liking, increase the proportion of wax in the product. This will also give you a balm that can handle higher temperatures without melting, for example during the summer. Our recipe provides a solid balm at normal room temperatures, but in direct sunlight on hot days the balm may melt slightly and soften.

If you want your lip balm to have a scent and flavor, you can choose flavors in balms specially formulated for use on the lips. Do not use fragrance oils or essential oils, these oils are not primarily intended for lip products and could cause an allergic reaction or irritation.

LIP BALM TREATMENT - RAW MATERIALS AND THEIR VARIATIONS

Do you want to know the importance of the ingredients in a recipe or how to vary them? Find out in the following lines.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WILL HELP YOU TO FIND OUT HOW TO MAKE THE RIGHT LIPSTICK

Beeswax is the basic ingredient that gives strength to the lip balm bar. This wax is valued for its high vitamin and mineral content and thus has an irreplaceable place in cosmetics. In our recipe, a slightly modified white wax was used, which was also chosen because it has no fragrance, so the subtle chocolate scent of the unrefined cocoa butter could stand out. White beeswax is particularly useful when making coloured lip balms (with pigments), as natural beeswax could affect the colour of the product with its golden colour. Of course, you can replace this white beeswax with natural beeswax with a characteristic scent.

Vegetable waxes are a vegan alternative. In this case, however, please note that the resulting consistency and stiffness of the bar balm may be different than when using beeswax. For example, try almond wax.

COCONUT BUTTER

an amazing vegetable butter that is not only an essential ingredient in chocolate, but also in many beauty products, including lip balms, is cocoa butter. This butter is characterised by its low melting point, so it melts on contact with the skin, making the lip balm smooth and easy to apply, while being well absorbed by the skin.

Natural unrefined cocoa butter has been used in our recipe, which has a light yellow colour and a characteristic chocolate scent that sells the final product. Refined cocoa butter, which does not contain any fragrance, is also an alternative. Alternatively, you can reach for other butters, but be aware that the final flavour may be affected.the final consistency and firmness of the product (bars) will be affected, so choose in particular butters that have a similar melting point to cocoa butter.

COTTONSEED OIL

Among the raw materials for the production of lip balm, vegetable oil must not be missing. In this case, neutral cottonseed oil has been chosen to nourish the lips and provide them with conditioning agents. Of course, you can choose any vegetable oil instead of cottonseed oil in the product, a great substitute is almond oil or apricot oil. Above all, choose oils that are neutral (no strong colour or smell), have a natural fractionated coconut oil or olive oil can also be a good choice if you have very dry lips.

SUNFLOWER LECITHIN

Sunflower lecithin is the nourishing ingredient in lip balm. This substance is also extracted from sunflower oil as a by-product in the refining process. Lecithin is used in cosmetics due to its two key properties. Firstly, it is an emulsifier that is able to combine water with oils to form an emulsion, and secondly, it leaves the skin silky soft, softens it and is responsible for the pleasant, light and gliding sensation when applying products to the skin or lips.

Since lecithin is not an essential ingredient in this recipe, you can leave it out, but you are missing out on the softening and nourishing properties of this substance. An alternative to sunflower lecithin may be soy lecithin.

NOTICE

As mentioned, you can experiment with homemade recipes to achieve the desired properties. However, many factors such as humidity, temperature, quality of ingredients and storage can affect the final result.

Before using any raw material to make a cosmetic product, familiarize yourself with its properties, recommended dosage, storage conditions or safe handling. Any raw material may have the potential to cause an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals, so before using a product, we recommend that you find out if you suffer from an allergy to any of the raw materials or the overall product, e.g. by a skin test.

If you have very sensitive or very acne-prone skin, or other skin and health problems, we recommend that you consult a medical professionalbefore applying a new product to your skin, whether it is a homemade cosmetic product, a pure raw material or a commercially available product.
