Product description

A white plastic pharmaceutical bottle with a volume of 10 ml and an aluminium screw cap makes ready-to-use packaging for small quantities of cosmetics: samples of serums and facial oils, travel packs, trial batches when developing a formulation, or measured portions of a fragrance composition for testing. The opaque white PET wall limits the access of light to the contents, which suits oils and active ingredients sensitive to light. The bottle is light and does not break when dropped, so it also works well for sending samples to customers. The cap seals the neck without any dispensing element; the contents are poured out of the bottle or dispensed directly into the palm or a dish.

The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The plastic bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact, while the set with the aluminium cap as a whole is intended for cosmetics.

What the set is suitable for

  • Samples and testers – 10 ml holds several applications of a serum, facial oil or toner, so customers can try the product without buying the full-size pack.
  • Trial batches – when fine-tuning a formulation, you set aside a small amount of emulsion or oil blend in a labelled bottle and monitor how its colour, fragrance and consistency change over time.
  • Travel packs – the plastic and a firmly tightened cap withstand transport in a cosmetic bag.
  • Oil blends and massage oils – small volumes that are dispensed by pouring, without a dropper or pump.

Material and closure

The bottle body is made of white PET; the pharmaceutical bottle shape has straight walls and a narrow neck with an 18 mm thread. The aluminium cap with a silver finish has an EPE (polyethylene foam) liner inside, which sits on the rim of the neck and seals it once tightened. We recommend checking the seal with your specific formulation, especially with very fluid oils and aqueous solutions, before you fill the whole batch.

With concentrated essential oils, undiluted fragrance compositions and products with a high alcohol content, we recommend checking compatibility with PET beforehand on one filled bottle. Watch for any change in shape, cloudiness of the wall or change in the fragrance of the contents.

Pour contents into a PET pharmaceutical bottle only after they have cooled. A hot emulsion or melted balm can deform the bottle wall and impair how the cap seats.

Nominal and brimful volume

Nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. Brimful volume is the physical volume up to the neck and is usually higher. The difference between them forms a reserve for the cap and for expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim, otherwise the contents are pushed onto the thread when the cap is tightened and the cap does not seal.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water in the narrow neck evaporates slowly, so the bottle is dried neck down.

The pharmaceutical bottle can be reused after thorough cleaning. The liner in the cap may retain the fragrance of the previous contents; when switching from a fragrance oil to an unscented serum, it is better to replace the cap.

You can find further closures with the same neck type and ready-made bottle + closure combinations in the Handymade range.

For recycling, the PET bottle goes into plastic and the aluminium cap into metals; separate them before disposal.

You can check the seal of a new batch easily. Fill one bottle to the nominal volume, tighten the cap and lay the bottle on its side on a paper towel for 24 hours. A dry towel confirms that the cap liner seats correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Does a white plastic pharmaceutical bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, the white opaque PET wall limits the access of light to the contents. It does not replace storage in the dark, however; for oils and active ingredients sensitive to light, we recommend keeping the bottles out of direct sunlight. The contents cannot be seen through the white wall, which is usually not a problem for samples and testers.
Is the set of a plastic pharmaceutical bottle with an aluminium cap suitable for food?
The set as a whole is not approved for contact with food. The plastic bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact, while the aluminium cap does not. The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products and is intended for this use.
How much should you actually fill into a 10 ml pharmaceutical bottle?
Fill it to the nominal volume, that is 10 ml. The physical volume of the bottle up to the rim of the neck is higher, and the difference serves as a reserve for the cap and for expansion of the contents. If you fill to the brim, the contents get onto the thread when the cap is tightened and the cap stops sealing.
Can the white PET pharmaceutical bottle be reused?
Yes, after thorough washing, disinfection with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and complete drying, the bottle can be refilled. The liner in the cap may retain the fragrance of the previous contents, so we recommend using a new cap when you change the product. Do not use a bottle with a damaged thread or a deformed wall.
Is a 10 ml plastic pharmaceutical bottle suitable for essential oils and alcohol-based solutions?
With concentrated essential oils, undiluted fragrance compositions and products with a high alcohol content, we recommend checking compatibility with PET first. Fill one bottle and after several days check the shape of the wall, any cloudiness and the fragrance of the contents. Fill the whole batch only once the bottle passes this test.
