Product description

Kaolin is a finely milled natural clay mineral whose main component is hydrated aluminum silicate – kaolinite. It is formed by natural weathering of feldspar-rich rocks and is subsequently obtained by mining, purification, drying and mechanical milling into a fine powder.
This kaolin is supplied as a technical grade. It is not declared as a cosmetic, pharmaceutical or food-grade raw material, therefore it is intended primarily for technical, decorative, craft, cleaning and laundry applications, not for manufacturing cosmetic products intended for the skin.

Use in formulation

Kaolin is insoluble in water and in oils; in formulations it is used as a dispersible powder component.
It is miscible with other mineral powders, clays, oxides, pigments, starches, carbonates, soda, sodium percarbonate, soap flakes and other dry free-flowing components used in laundry and cleaning blends.
In laundry powders it can act as a mineral filler, carrier and absorbent component; it helps improve flowability and a more uniform distribution of active components in the dry blend.
In scouring powders it can contribute to a mildly abrasive and absorbent effect, while the final performance depends on the overall composition of the formulation and the type of surface being cleaned.
When used on surfaces, we recommend first carrying out a test on a small inconspicuous area, especially on glossy, lacquered, natural, porous or sensitive materials.
In aqueous systems it forms a suspension or paste, therefore sedimentation must be expected and the blend should be stirred before use.
Add it gradually to blends under continuous stirring in order to minimize lump formation and achieve uniform dispersion.
In pastes and masses it can increase viscosity, a drier feel, opacity and mineral texture.
When working with powdered raw materials, we recommend using respiratory protection and preventing excessive dust formation.
Since this is a technical grade, do not use it as a substitute for cosmetic kaolin in face masks, powders, color cosmetics or in products coming into contact with the skin.

Safety and storage

Store kaolin in a well-closed container, in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and sources of moisture.
During handling, avoid inhalation of dust and work in a well-ventilated area.
Use appropriate protective equipment, especially a respirator or protective mask when transferring larger quantities.
Protect it from contamination with water, oils, colorants and other substances that could affect its purity and behavior in the blend.
When used in laundry and cleaning blends, follow the safety recommendations also for the other components of the formulation, especially for alkaline substances and oxidizing components.
The product is intended for technical use. Do not use it in foods, medicinal products or cosmetic products intended for application to the skin.

FAQ

What is the difference between technical kaolin and cosmetic kaolin?

Technical kaolin is not declared according to cosmetic requirements regarding purity, microbiological quality, heavy metals or documentation required for cosmetic products. Cosmetic kaolin must meet stricter criteria for use on the skin.

Can I use this kaolin in a face mask?

No. Since this is a technical grade, it is not recommended for use in face masks, powders, bath blends or other products that are applied to the skin.

Is technical kaolin suitable for laundry powder?

Yes, in technical and household laundry powders it can be used as a mineral filler and absorbent component. However, it is always necessary to verify the behavior of the entire formulation, especially when combined with soda, sodium percarbonate, soap or other cleaning substances.

Can kaolin damage the cleaned surface?

On sensitive, glossy, lacquered, natural or porous surfaces, any mineral powder component can affect the appearance of the surface. Before use it is advisable to carry out a test on a small inconspicuous area.

Why does kaolin settle to the bottom in a water-based blend?

Kaolin does not dissolve in water, it is only dispersed in it. When left standing, the mineral particles naturally settle, therefore the blend must be stirred before use or its viscosity adjusted with a suitable thickener.

Can kaolin be colored with pigments?

Yes, in technical and craft blends it can be combined with mineral pigments, oxides or clays. It is recommended to first prepare a small test batch, as the final color depends on the ratio of powders and the binder used.

Is kaolin suitable for working with children?

During educational and creative activities, supervision by an adult is required. It is important to prevent inhalation of dust, contact with eyes and use of the raw material on the skin or in the mouth.
