Product description

Floral water, hydrolate, Italian helichrysum in organic quality is an herbal aqueous cosmetic raw material obtained by steam distillation of the flowering tops or aerial part of Italian helichrysum, Helichrysum italicum. The plant is also known as immortelle or everlasting. During distillation, a mildly aromatic aqueous phase is formed with a typical herbal, dry, honey-spicy scent, which is less concentrated than the essential oil of helichrysum.
Organic helichrysum hydrolate is suitable for mature, dry, sensitive, reddened, stressed or tired skin. In cosmetics it is used in facial toners, regeneration-oriented serums, products after shaving, after depilation, after sun exposure, in masks and emulsions where a comfortable skin feel is desired.

Key benefits

  • Herbal helichrysum hydrolate – suitable for targeted facial and body care.
  • Suitable for mature skin – popular in formulations focused on skin comfort and vitality.
  • Practical after mechanical stress to the skin – suitable for products used after shaving, depilation or massage.
  • Characteristic immortelle scent – dry, herbal, honey-spicy and more pronounced than in gentle floral waters.
  • Suitable as the water phase – incorporates well into gels, toners and emulsions.
  • Good combinability – suitable with panthenol, allantoin, aloe vera, peptides, betaine and ceramide systems.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial toners for mature, sensitive and tired skin,
  • regeneration-oriented serums with peptides, panthenol or betaine,
  • products after shaving and depilation,
  • creams and emulsions for dry and stressed skin,
  • after-sun masks and hydrating gels,
  • massage emulsions and body milks,
  • hair tonics for sensitive scalp.

Use in formulation

  • Recommended dosage: 1 – 100 %.
  • Soluble in: water.
  • Miscible with: water, glycerin, aloe vera, propanediol and water-soluble active ingredients.
  • Compatible with: toners, serums, hydrogels, oil-in-water emulsions and cleansing products.
  • It is recommended to add during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).
  • In aftershave formulations: suitable with panthenol, allantoin, betaine and light hydrating components.
  • In products for mature skin: suitable with peptides, niacinamide at an appropriate pH, antioxidants and a lipid phase with ceramides.

Physical properties

  • Appearance: aqueous liquid.
  • Odour: herbal, dry, honey-spicy, typical of helichrysum.
  • Nature of the raw material: hydrolate, floral water, herbal aqueous component.
  • Solubility: soluble in the water phase.
  • Origin: flowering tops or aerial part of Italian helichrysum.

Safety and storage

  • Intended for cosmetic use.
  • For sensitive skin, we recommend a patch test for tolerance.
  • The scent of helichrysum can be more pronounced, therefore in gentle products dose it with regard to sensorial properties.
  • Protect from contamination, heat, frost and light.
  • Store in a well-closed container, ideally in a cool, dark place.
  • For the finished formulation, verify pH, preservation and microbiological stability.

FAQ

Why is helichrysum also called immortelle?

The name is related to the flowers, which retain their shape and colour for a long time after drying. In cosmetics, the names helichrysum, immortelle or everlasting are often used.

Is it suitable after shaving?

Yes, it can be part of gentle aftershave products, especially in combination with panthenol, allantoin or betaine.

Is the scent of helichrysum suitable for everyone?

It is more pronounced, herbal and dry, therefore it is advisable to test it at the target concentration during formulation development.

Can it be combined with peptides?

Yes, it can form the water phase of a peptide serum, provided the pH and preservation are suitable for the specific peptide.

Is it suitable for a balm?

It is not directly suitable for an anhydrous balm because it is aqueous. It can be used in an emulsion balm with a suitable emulsifier and preservation.
