Product description

Glass bottle, translucent milky, with black cap, 50 ml is a complete packaging and closure set for products that are poured or decanted: facial and body oils, serums, tinctures and tonics. The glass bottle with a nominal volume of 50 ml has a milky matte surface that diffuses light while still letting the contents show through, so you can see both the colour and the level of the product. A simple black screw cap closes the bottle without a dispensing element. The set is also suitable for small batches and samples of your own production.

Why choose this set

  • Glass without taste or odour – glass is chemically inert, does not react with oils, essential oils, alcohol or aqueous solutions and does not absorb fragrance. It is therefore also suitable for fragrant and alcoholic blends that can soften or discolour some plastics.
  • Matte surface diffuses light – milky glass reduces direct light exposure to the contents, but does not replace the protection of dark brown or blue glass. Store oils with a higher proportion of unsaturated fatty acids away from sunlight regardless.
  • Cap with sealing insert – the black polypropylene cap with a 18/410 thread has an internal foam insert that seats against the neck and prevents leakage. The contents are poured directly from the neck.
  • Volume for small batches – 50 ml corresponds to a standard packaging size for a facial oil or serum lasting several weeks of use and is also practical for test batches of a new formulation.
  • Declared suitability for cosmetics – both the bottle and the cap are suitable for contact with cosmetic products; the EU declaration of conformity is issued by Handymade and can be found with the product.

Nominal and total volume

When filling, it is useful to distinguish between two figures. Nominal volume is the quantity for which the bottle is designed at normal filling and which is stated on the label. Total volume to the brim is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between them provides a reserve for the cap, any dispensing element, and for expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If overfilled, the contents will reach the thread and the cap will not seal properly.

If you fill oils after heating, let them cool to room temperature first. Warm contents have a larger volume and the level would drop after cooling, making the bottle appear underfilled.

What the set is suitable for

A bottle with a plain cap is suitable for products that are poured or decanted: facial and massage oils, oil serums, tinctures and macerations, cleansing oils, facial waters and tonics applied with a cotton pad. It also works well as packaging for test batches you want to set aside for stability monitoring.

It is less suitable for thick creams and butters that are difficult to remove through a narrow neck, and for products where you need drop-by-drop dispensing or spraying. For such uses, choose the same bottle with a different closure: closures with the same neck type and ready-made combinations are available in the Handymade range. With your own combination, verify the seal and the behaviour of the packaging with the specific formulation.

Good to know

Preparation before first filling. Wash the bottle and cap before use, sanitise with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow to dry completely. Residual water in an anhydrous oil product can promote microbial growth and without a preservative there is nothing to stop it.

Repeated use. Glass can be washed and sanitised repeatedly without any change in properties. The cap wears out with frequent opening and the sealing insert may absorb the scent of previous contents, so replace it when changing products.

Labelling. Degrease the matte glass surface before applying a self-adhesive label. Label dimensions can be found in the product specifications.

Glass and heat. Glass can withstand washing in warm water, but not sudden thermal shock. Do not pour hot contents into a cold bottle or vice versa.

The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. It is not intended for direct contact with food, so do not use it for home-made oils, syrups or macerations intended for consumption.

Recycling. Glass goes into glass recycling, the plastic cap into plastic recycling; separate them before disposal.

Frequently asked questions

Does the milky glass bottle protect the contents from light?
Partially. Matte milky glass diffuses and attenuates light, but does not provide the same protection as brown or blue glass. For standard facial oils, serums and tonics stored away from direct sunlight, this is sufficient. For raw materials that are very sensitive to light, such as oils with a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids or retinoids, choose dark glass and store in darkness.
How much product fits in the 50 ml glass bottle?
The bottle is designed to be filled to the nominal volume of 50 ml. Its total volume to the brim is slightly larger, but this difference is a reserve for the cap and expansion of the contents, not additional filling space. If you fill the bottle to the brim, the contents will reach the thread, the cap will not seal and the product may leak. The exact total volume can be found in the product specifications.
Is the glass bottle with black cap suitable for both oils and alcoholic tinctures?
Yes, glass is suitable for oil, alcoholic and aqueous contents. It does not react with essential oils or alcohol and does not absorb fragrance. The cap is made of polypropylene with a foam sealing insert; with alcoholic and fragrant blends, we recommend checking the seal and any absorption of scent by the insert after a few weeks.
Can the 50 ml glass bottle be reused?
Yes, the glass bottle can be washed repeatedly, sanitised with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and refilled. It must be completely dry before filling. The cap wears out with frequent screwing and the sealing insert may retain the scent of previous contents, so replace it with a new one when changing products or when the seal becomes less effective.
Can I use a dropper or spray pump with this bottle?
Yes, the bottle has a neck with an 18/410 thread, so it can be combined with closures of the same neck type, including droppers and pump sprayers. Ready-made combinations are available in the Handymade range. With your own combination, verify that the closure seals and that the length of the dropper or dip tube matches the height of the bottle.
Is the set suitable for food, such as home-made oils or syrups?
No, the set is not approved for direct contact with food. Both the bottle and the cap are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products, meaning oils, serums, tonics and tinctures intended for skin use. For home-made food oils, syrups or macerations intended for consumption, choose packaging certified for food contact.
