Floral water, hydrosol, mint in organic quality is a fresh aqueous cosmetic raw material obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and aerial parts of mint, most commonly the species Mentha piperita or related species of the genus Mentha. During distillation, water vapour passes through the plant material, releases the volatile aromatic and water-soluble components of the plant, and after cooling a hydrosol is formed – an aqueous phase with a naturally fresh, herbal and menthol scent.
Organic mint hydrosol is particularly suitable for cosmetics intended for combination, oily, impure, tired, overheated or comfort-demanding skin. In formulations it is used as the aqueous phase, facial water, toner, refreshing mist, part of cleansing products or as a hair-care component for a fresh feeling on the scalp. Compared to mint essential oil, the hydrosol is significantly milder, less concentrated, watery and easy to incorporate into formulations with a high water content.

hair tonics, shampoos and conditioners for a fresh feeling on the scalp,
clay, herbal and powder masks to be mixed just before use,
aftershave and post-depilation products, if the formulation is designed to be mild and non-irritating.

Use in formulation

Recommended dosage: usually 1 – 100 % depending on the product type; may constitute part or all of the aqueous phase.
Soluble in: water and aqueous cosmetic systems.
Miscible with: distilled water, glycerin, propanediol, aloe vera juice, hydrogels and water-soluble active ingredients.
Compatible with: oil-in-water emulsions, facial toners, gels, serums, mild cleansing products, shampoos and rinse-off hair care products.
Emulsion products: incorporate into the aqueous phase; in formulations that are heated, it is advisable to add part of the hydrosol only in the cooling phase to minimise unnecessary overheating of delicate aromatic components.
It is recommended to add during cooling (at a temperature below 40 °C).
Leave-on products: particularly suitable for facial mists, toners, gels, serums, hair waters and body sprays; for sensitive skin we recommend choosing a lower dosage within the overall formulation.
Rinse-off products: can be used in shampoos, shower gels, foams and mild cleansing products as part of the aqueous phase.
Formulation pH: always measure the final pH in the finished formulation and adjust it according to the preservative used, active ingredients and target product type.

Safety and storage

Intended for cosmetic use and further processing in cosmetic formulations.
For sensitive skin or first-time use we recommend performing a patch test on a small area of skin.
For formulations intended for the eye area, very sensitive skin or small children, it is necessary to carefully assess the suitability of the entire formulation.
Avoid contamination of the contents – use clean tools, close the container immediately after use and do not pour back raw material that has already been taken out.
Store in a well-closed container, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
Storage in a cool, dry and dark place is suitable; hydrosols are aqueous raw materials sensitive to microbial contamination.
When manufacturing the finished cosmetic product, always verify the final pH, microbiological stability and suitability of the preservative system.

FAQ

Can mint hydrosol replace mint essential oil?

Not completely. Hydrosol is an aqueous raw material with a subtle scent and a low content of aromatic substances, whereas essential oil is a concentrated oily fraction. In a formulation they differ in intensity, dosage and mode of incorporation.

Is mint hydrosol suitable for summer cosmetic products?

Yes, it is suitable for light facial mists, body sprays, gels and refreshing waters. For products used in heat, appropriate packaging, clean manufacturing and a reliable preservative system are important.

Can it be used in foot-care products?

Yes, it is suitable for sprays, gels, bath products and light foot creams, where its fresh mint character is utilised. The resulting feel also depends on other components, for example moisturizing substances, the alcohol phase or cooling ingredients.

Can it be combined with hyaluronic acid?

Yes, it can serve as an aqueous base for gels and serums with hyaluronic acid. During preparation it is necessary to allow the hyaluronic acid to hydrate sufficiently, to work hygienically and to use an appropriate preservative system.

Is it suitable for products with clay or activated charcoal?

Yes, it can be used to disperse clay masks or masks with activated charcoal just before application. A mixture prepared in this way is intended for immediate use and should not be stored without proven preservation.

Can mint hydrosol be added to an already finished shampoo or toner?

It is not recommended to add it subsequently to a finished preserved product without adjusting the formulation. This will change the ratio of water, preservative, active substances, cleansing components and pH, which may affect stability and microbiological safety.
