Product description

Floral water, hydrosol, linden is a gentle aqueous cosmetic raw material obtained by steam distillation of linden blossoms, most commonly from the species Tilia cordata or Tilia platyphyllos. During distillation, water vapor passes through the plant material, releases the fine aromatic and water‑soluble components of the blossoms, and after cooling a hydrosol is formed – an aqueous phase with a natural, lightly sweet, honey‑floral scent typical of linden blossom.
Linden hydrosol is particularly suitable for cosmetics intended for dry, sensitive, delicate, mature, tired, reddened or irritated skin. In cosmetic formulations it is used as the aqueous phase, facial mist, toner, refreshing spray or as a soothing component of emulsions, gels, masks and hair care products. Thanks to its soft sensory profile, it is popular in formulas where the aim is to support a pleasant skin feel, softness, hydration and comfort without strong perfuming.

Key benefits

  • Gentle floral water for sensitive skin – suitable for products for skin prone to redness, tightness and irritation.
  • Supports comfort of dry and mature skin – practical for hydrating toners, serums, creams and facial milks.
  • Pleasant honey‑floral scent – gives cosmetics a natural, delicate aromatic profile without the need for strong perfuming.
  • Suitable as part of the aqueous phase – can partially or completely replace distilled water in selected formulations.
  • Soothing character – suitable for products used after shaving, after depilation, after showering or for caring for stressed skin.
  • Good compatibility with moisturizing ingredients – suitable with glycerin, aloe vera, panthenol, allantoin, betaine and hyaluronic acid.
  • Universal use – suitable for facial, body, hair and gentle cleansing cosmetics.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial waters, toners and face mists for sensitive, dry, mature, reddened or tired skin,
  • hydrating gels and serums with aloe vera, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol or allantoin,
  • creams, facial milks and body emulsions as a gentle aqueous phase,
  • after‑shave and post‑depilation products to support skin comfort,
  • body sprays and refreshing waters after showering, sports or staying in warmth,
  • clay, herbal and powder masks to be mixed immediately before use,
  • gentle cleansing gels, facial cleansing waters and micellar products with an appropriately selected pH and preservative system,
  • hair tonics, shampoos and conditioners for dry or sensitive scalp,
  • cosmetic compresses and poultices for localized skin care.

Use in formulation

  • Recommended dosage: usually 1 – 100 % depending on the product type; it can form part or all of the aqueous phase.
  • Soluble in: water and aqueous cosmetic systems.
  • Miscible with: distilled water, glycerin, propanediol, aloe vera juice, hydrogels and water‑soluble active ingredients.
  • Compatible with: oil‑in‑water emulsions, facial toners, gels, serums, gentle cleansing products, shampoos and rinse‑off hair care.
  • Emulsion products: incorporate into the aqueous phase; for formulas that are heated, it is advisable to add part of the hydrosol only during the cooling phase to minimize unnecessary overheating of the delicate aromatic components.
  • It is recommended to add during cooling (at a temperature below 40 °C).
  • Leave‑on products: particularly suitable for facial mists, toners, serums, gels and creams; the final pH and microbiological stability of the finished product must always be checked.
  • Rinse‑off products: can be used in shampoos, shower gels, foams and gentle cleansing products as part of the aqueous phase.
  • Formulation pH: always measure the final pH in the finished formulation and adjust according to the preservative used, the active substances and the target product type.

Safety and storage

  • Intended for cosmetic use and for further processing in cosmetic formulations.
  • For sensitive skin or at first use, it is recommended to carry out a patch test on a small area of skin.
  • Avoid contamination of the contents – use clean tools, close the container immediately after use and do not pour already withdrawn raw material back in.
  • Store in a well‑closed container, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
  • Storage in a cool, dry and dark place is suitable; hydrosols are aqueous raw materials sensitive to microbial contamination.
  • When manufacturing the finished cosmetic product, always verify the final pH, microbiological stability and suitability of the preservative system.
  • For products intended for children, pregnant women or very sensitive skin, it is necessary to assess the suitability of the entire formulation, not only of the hydrosol itself.

FAQ

Can linden hydrosol replace linden extract?

Not completely. Hydrosol is a gentle aqueous aromatic raw material from distillation, whereas extract is usually more concentrated and may contain other groups of substances depending on the solvent used. In a formulation they have different intensity and technological function.

Is linden hydrosol suitable for cosmetics without added fragrance?

Yes, it can be used in formulas without added fragrance. However, it should be taken into account that it itself has a natural, delicate linden blossom scent, which may become noticeable in simple aqueous products.

Can it be combined with ceramides or lipid components?

Yes, in emulsion products it can form the aqueous phase, while ceramides, plant oils or lipid components are incorporated according to their solubility into the oil phase or into a pre‑prepared dispersion. A suitable emulsifier and stability of the entire formulation are important.

Is it suitable for products for the eye area?

It can be part of gentle products intended for the eye area, but the formula must be designed specifically for this area. Low irritation potential, suitable pH, cleanliness of manufacture and microbiological safety are important.

Can linden hydrosol be used in a facial mask with honey or glycerin?

Yes, when preparing a fresh mask it can be combined with glycerin, honey or powdered raw materials. Such a mixture is intended for immediate use and should not be stored without proven preservation.

Can it be added to an already finished toner?

Adding it afterwards to a finished preserved toner is not recommended without adjusting the formulation. This changes the ratio of water, preservative, active substances and pH, which can affect stability as well as microbiological safety.
