Product description

Floral water, hydrosol, tea tree is an herbal aqueous cosmetic raw material obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and young twigs of the Australian tea tree, Melaleuca alternifolia. During distillation, an aqueous phase is formed with a typical fresh, clean and slightly medicinal aromatic tea tree profile. Compared to tea tree essential oil, the hydrosol is less concentrated, water-based and suitable for formulations where a milder aromatic raw material is needed.
Tea tree hydrosol is particularly suitable for cosmetics intended for oily, combination, impure, problem or comfort-demanding skin. It is used in facial toners, cleansing gels, spot products, hair tonics, shampoos, foot care products, clay masks and deodorant-oriented products.

Key benefits

  • Pure herbal hydrosol – suitable for formulations for impure and oily skin.
  • Milder than essential oil – practical for aqueous formulas and toners.
  • Suitable for spot care – used in gels and roll-on products for problem areas.
  • Popular in hair care – suitable for a fresh feeling of the scalp.
  • Suitable for foot care products – for sprays, gels and bath products.
  • Good combinability – suitable with niacinamide, zinc, panthenol, aloe vera, clays and mild surfactants.

Suitable for products such as

  • toners for problem skin,
  • cleansing gels and foams,
  • spot gels and roll-on products,
  • clay masks and masks with activated charcoal,
  • hair tonics and shampoos,
  • foot sprays and gels,
  • deodorant-oriented body sprays,
  • light hydrating gels for oily skin.

Use in formulation

  • Recommended dosage: 1 – 100 %; for sensitive skin in leave-on products, start with a lower percentage.
  • Soluble in: water.
  • Miscible with: distilled water, hydrosols, glycerin, aloe vera, propanediol and hydrogels.
  • Compatible with: toners, cleansing gels, spot gels, hair tonics, shampoos and oil-in-water emulsions.
  • It is recommended to add during the cooling phase (at temperatures below 40 °C).
  • For impure skin: suitable with niacinamide, zinc PCA, panthenol, allantoin and light humectants.
  • For foot care products: suitable with mint hydrosol, glycerin, urea in permitted cosmetic use and deodorant components.

Safety and storage

  • Intended for cosmetic use.
  • For sensitive skin, we recommend a patch test.
  • For the eye area, children’s cosmetics and very sensitive skin, assess the entire formula.
  • The hydrosol is milder than the essential oil but has a pronounced herbal character.
  • Protect from contamination, light, heat and frost.
  • Store in a well-closed container, ideally in a cool, dark place.
  • In the finished product, verify the pH and the preservation system.

FAQ

Is tea tree hydrosol suitable for a spot gel?

Yes, it can be part of a spot gel for problem areas, especially in combination with panthenol, zinc or niacinamide at an appropriate pH.

Can it be used instead of tea tree oil?

Not entirely. The hydrosol is a watery, milder component, while the essential oil is a concentrated oil fraction with different dosage and solubility.

Is it suitable for an anti-grease shampoo?

Yes, it is suitable for shampoos and hair tonics for scalps prone to oiliness. The surfactants used and the product pH are also important.

Can it be combined with salicylic acid?

It can form part of the aqueous phase, but for salicylic acid, dissolution, pH, regulatory dosage and the tolerance of the finished formula are decisive.

Is it suitable for foot care products?

Yes, it is used in sprays, gels and bath products for the feet, where a fresh, clean herbal profile is desired.
