Product description

Floral water, hydrosol, lavender is a gentle aqueous cosmetic raw material obtained by steam distillation of the flowering aerial parts of lavender, most commonly the species Lavandula angustifolia. During distillation, water vapour passes through the plant material, releases volatile aromatic components and, after cooling, the essential oil separates from the aqueous phase. This aqueous phase is lavender hydrosol – it naturally contains water-soluble substances from the plant and trace amounts of typical aromatic lavender components.
Lavender hydrosol is one of the most versatile floral waters used in natural, artisanal and professional cosmetics. It is suitable as the aqueous phase, facial water, toner, refreshing mist or as a component of emulsions, gels, masks and hair care products. In formulations it is used especially for sensitive, combination, oily, impure, irritated, reddened or sun-exposed skin. Compared to lavender essential oil, the hydrosol is significantly milder, watery, less concentrated and easier to incorporate into formulations with a high water content.

Key benefits

  • Universal floral water – suitable for facial, body, hair and gentle cleansing cosmetics.
  • Soothing effect on the skin – suitable for products for skin prone to redness, tightness, irritation or discomfort.
  • Suitable for combination and oily skin – often used in toners, facial waters and light gels for skin prone to blemishes.
  • Refreshing sensation on application – practical in facial mists, body sprays, aftershave products or products used after sun exposure.
  • Delicate herbal lavender fragrance – gives cosmetics a natural aromatic character without the need for strong perfuming.
  • Suitable as part of the aqueous phase – can partially or completely replace distilled water in selected cosmetic formulations.
  • Good compatibility with moisturising ingredients – suitable with glycerin, aloe vera, panthenol, allantoin, betaine and hyaluronic acid.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial waters, toners and facial mists for sensitive, combination, oily, impure or tired skin,
  • light hydrating gels and serums with aloe vera, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol or allantoin,
  • creams, facial milks and body emulsions as part of the aqueous phase,
  • aftershave and post-depilation products to support skin comfort,
  • body sprays and refreshing waters after showering, sports or staying in warm conditions,
  • clay, herbal and powder masks to be mixed immediately before use,
  • hair tonics, shampoos and conditioners for a fresh scalp sensation,
  • gentle cleansing gels, micellar waters and make-up removers with an appropriately chosen pH and preservative system,
  • cosmetic compresses and poultices for local skin care.

Use in formulation

  • Recommended dosage: usually 1 – 100 % depending on the product type; it can form part or all of the aqueous phase.
  • Soluble in: water and aqueous cosmetic systems.
  • Miscible with: distilled water, glycerin, propanediol, aloe vera juice, hydrogels and water-soluble active ingredients.
  • Compatible with: oil-in-water emulsions, facial toners, gels, serums, shampoos, shower gels and rinse-off hair products.
  • Emulsion products: incorporate into the aqueous phase; for formulations that are heated it is advisable to add part of the hydrosol only during the cooling phase to minimise unnecessary overheating of aromatic components.
  • It is recommended to add during cooling (at a temperature below 40 °C).
  • Leave-on products: particularly suitable for facial mists, toners, serums, gels and creams; it is always necessary to check the final pH and microbiological stability of the finished product.
  • Rinse-off products: can be used in shampoos, shower gels and gentle cleansing products as part of the aqueous phase.
  • Formulation pH: always measure the final pH in the finished formulation and adjust it according to the preservative used, the active ingredients and the target product type.

Safety and storage

  • Intended for cosmetic use and for further processing in cosmetic formulations.
  • For sensitive skin or for first-time use, it is recommended to carry out a patch test on a small area of skin.
  • Avoid contamination of the contents – use clean tools, close the container immediately after use and do not pour back raw material that has already been taken out.
  • Store in a well-closed container, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
  • It is advisable to store in a cool, dry and dark place; hydrosols are aqueous raw materials sensitive to microbial contamination.
  • When producing a finished cosmetic product, always verify the final pH, microbiological stability and suitability of the preservative system.
  • For products intended for children, pregnant women or very sensitive skin, it is necessary to assess the suitability of the entire formulation, not only of the hydrosol itself.

FAQ

Can lavender hydrosol replace lavender essential oil?

Not completely. Hydrosol is an aqueous raw material with a gentle scent and a low content of volatile substances, whereas essential oil is a concentrated oily aromatic component. In a formulation they have different functions, dosage levels and ways of incorporation.

Is lavender hydrosol suitable for fragrance-free cosmetics?

Yes, it can also be used in formulations without added fragrance. However, it should be taken into account that it has its own natural lavender scent, which may be more pronounced in an unfragranced product.

Can it be used in a hair lotion for the scalp?

Yes, it is suitable for hair lotions, tonics or light sprays for the scalp. For leave-on use it is important that the formulation is not sticky, has a suitable pH and is properly preserved.

Can it be combined with niacinamide?

Yes, it can be used as part of the aqueous phase in products containing niacinamide. With such a combination it is important to set the final pH of the finished product within a range suitable both for niacinamide and for the preservative used.

Is it suitable for mixing a powder face mask?

Yes, it is suitable for mixing clay, herbal or powder masks immediately before application. A mixture prepared in this way should be used fresh and should not be stored without proven preservation.

Can lavender hydrosol be added to an already finished product?

It is not recommended to add it afterwards to a finished preserved product without adjusting the formulation. This changes the ratio of water, preservative, active ingredients and pH, which may affect stability and microbiological safety.
