Product description

Floral water, hydrosol, frankincense is a gentle aqueous cosmetic raw material obtained by steam distillation of the aromatic resin of the frankincense tree, most commonly from species of the genus Boswellia. Frankincense resin is formed by natural or controlled incisions in the bark of the tree, from which a resinous exudate flows out. After harvesting and cleaning, the resin is distilled with steam; during distillation, a concentrated oily fraction is separated and at the same time a hydrosol is formed – an aqueous phase with a subtle balsamic, resinous and slightly woody aromatic profile.
Frankincense hydrosol is particularly suitable in cosmetics for formulations intended for mature, dry, sensitive, tired, reddened or comfort‑seeking skin. In formulations it is used as the aqueous phase, as a facial mist, toner, face spray or as a gentle aromatic component in emulsions, gels, serums, masks and hair care products. Compared to frankincense essential oil, the hydrosol is significantly milder, less concentrated, soluble in the aqueous phase and technologically suitable for products with a high water content.

Key benefits

  • Gentle resinous floral water – suitable for facial, body, hair care and mild cleansing cosmetics.
  • Suitable for mature and dry skin – practical for toners, serums, creams and emulsions focused on comfort and softness of the skin.
  • Supports comfort of sensitive skin – suitable for products intended for skin prone to redness, tightness or irritation.
  • Balsamic resinous scent – gives cosmetics an elegant, gently woody and meditative aromatic character without the use of concentrated essential oil.
  • Suitable as part of the aqueous phase – can partially or completely replace distilled water in selected cosmetic formulations.
  • Good compatibility with moisturizing ingredients – suitable in combination with glycerin, aloe vera, panthenol, allantoin, betaine and hyaluronic acid.
  • Suitable for products with a more luxurious sensory profile – especially for facial mists, serums, creams, masks and body sprays.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial waters, toners and facial mists for mature, dry, sensitive, tired or reddened skin,
  • moisturizing gels and serums with aloe vera, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol or allantoin,
  • creams, facial milks and body emulsions as a gentle aqueous phase,
  • night facial products with a comfortable, balsamic aromatic profile,
  • post‑shaving and post‑depilation products to support a pleasant skin feel,
  • clay, herbal and powder masks to be mixed immediately before use,
  • gentle cleansing gels, facial cleansing waters and micellar products with appropriately chosen pH and preservative system,
  • hair tonics, shampoos and conditioners for dry or sensitive scalp,
  • body sprays and aromatic waters with a resinous‑woody character.

Use in formulations

  • Recommended usage level: usually 1 – 100 % depending on the type of product; it can form part of or the entire aqueous phase.
  • Soluble in: water and aqueous cosmetic systems.
  • Miscible with: distilled water, glycerin, propanediol, aloe vera juice, hydrogels and water‑soluble active ingredients.
  • Compatible with: oil‑in‑water emulsions, facial toners, gels, serums, mild cleansing products, shampoos and rinse‑off hair care.
  • Emulsion products: incorporate into the aqueous phase; for formulations that are heated, it is advisable to add part of the hydrosol only during the cooling phase to minimize unnecessary overheating of delicate aromatic components.
  • It is recommended to add during cooling (at a temperature below 40 °C).
  • Leave‑on products: particularly suitable for facial mists, toners, serums, gels and creams; it is always necessary to check the final pH and microbiological stability of the finished product.
  • Rinse‑off products: can be used in shampoos, shower gels, foams and gentle cleansing products as part of the aqueous phase.
  • Formulation pH: always measure the final pH in the finished formulation and adjust according to the preservative used, the active ingredients and the target product type.

Safety and storage

  • Intended for cosmetic use and for further processing in cosmetic formulations.
  • For sensitive skin or first‑time use we recommend performing a patch test on a small area of skin.
  • Avoid contamination of the contents – use clean tools, close the packaging immediately after use and do not pour back raw material that has already been taken out.
  • Store in a well‑closed container, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
  • Storage in a cool, dry and dark place is appropriate; hydrosols are aqueous raw materials sensitive to microbial contamination.
  • When manufacturing the finished cosmetic product, always verify the final pH, microbiological stability and suitability of the preservative system.
  • For products intended for children, pregnant women or very sensitive skin, it is necessary to assess the suitability of the entire formulation, not only of the hydrosol itself.

FAQ

Can frankincense hydrosol replace frankincense essential oil?

Not completely. The hydrosol is an aqueous raw material with a subtle scent and a low content of aromatic substances, whereas the essential oil is a concentrated oily fraction. In a formulation they differ in intensity, dosage and method of incorporation.

Is frankincense hydrosol suitable for cosmetics without added fragrance?

Yes, it can be used in formulations without added fragrance. However, you need to take into account that it itself has a natural resinous‑balsamic scent, which may be noticeable in simple aqueous products.

Can it be used in a serum with peptides?

Yes, it can form part of the aqueous phase in serums with peptides, provided that the final pH and preservative system are suitable for the peptides used. For peptide‑based formulations it is necessary to follow the recommendations of the supplier of the specific active ingredient.

Is it suitable for a clay mask for drier skin?

Yes, it can be used to disperse a clay or powder mask immediately before application. For drier skin it is advisable to enrich the mask with a moisturizing or lipid component so that it does not feel too tightening after rinsing.

Can it be combined with ceramides and plant oils?

Yes, in emulsion products it can form the aqueous phase, while ceramides, plant oils or butters are incorporated, according to their solubility, into the oil phase or into a suitable dispersion. The correct emulsifier and the stability of the entire formulation are crucial.

Can it be added to an already finished cream or toner?

It is not recommended to add it afterwards to a finished preserved product without modifying the formulation. This changes the ratio of water, preservative, active ingredients and pH, which may affect stability and microbiological safety.
