Product description

Floral water, hydrosol, lemon balm in organic (BIO) quality is a gentle aqueous cosmetic raw material obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and aerial parts of lemon balm, known as Melissa officinalis. During distillation, steam passes through the plant material, releases the plant’s fine aromatic and water-soluble components and, after cooling, a hydrosol is formed – an aqueous phase with a naturally fresh, herbal and slightly lemony scent typical of lemon balm.
Organic lemon balm hydrosol is particularly suitable for cosmetics intended for sensitive, combination, oily, tired, irritated, reddened or comfort-demanding skin. In formulations it is used as the aqueous phase, facial water, tonic, refreshing mist or a gentle aromatic component in emulsions, gels, masks, cleansing products and hair care cosmetics. Compared to lemon balm essential oil, the hydrosol is significantly milder, less concentrated and better suited for products with a high water content.

Key benefits

  • Gentle herbal floral water – suitable for facial, body, hair and gentle cleansing cosmetics.
  • Suitable for sensitive and irritated skin – practical in products for skin prone to redness, tightness or discomfort.
  • Suitable for combination and oily skin – often used in toners, facial waters and light gels for skin prone to shine or blemishes.
  • Fresh herbal scent – gives cosmetics a natural, slightly lemony aromatic character without the need for strong perfuming.
  • Suitable as part of the aqueous phase – can partially or completely replace distilled water in selected cosmetic formulations.
  • Supports a pleasant feel after application – suitable for facial mists, toners, aftershave products, post-depilation products or after exposure to heat.
  • Good compatibility with moisturizing substances – suitable in combination with glycerin, aloe vera, panthenol, allantoin, betaine and hyaluronic acid.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial waters, toners and facial mists for sensitive, combination, oily, irritated or tired skin,
  • light hydrating gels and serums with aloe vera, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol or allantoin,
  • creams, facial milks and body emulsions as part of the aqueous phase,
  • gentle cleansing gels, facial cleansing waters and micellar products with an appropriately selected pH and preservative system,
  • aftershave and post-depilation products to support skin comfort,
  • body sprays and refreshing waters after showering, sports or staying in the heat,
  • clay, herbal and powder masks to be mixed immediately before use,
  • hair tonics, shampoos and conditioners for a fresh feeling on the scalp,
  • cosmetic compresses and poultices for local care of stressed skin.

Use in formulation

  • Recommended dosage: usually 1 – 100 % depending on the product type; it can form part or all of the aqueous phase.
  • Soluble in: water and aqueous cosmetic systems.
  • Miscible with: distilled water, glycerin, propanediol, aloe vera juice, hydrogels and water-soluble active ingredients.
  • Compatible with: oil-in-water emulsions, facial toners, gels, serums, gentle cleansing products, shampoos and rinse-off hair care cosmetics.
  • Emulsion products: incorporate into the aqueous phase; for formulations that are heated, it is advisable to add part of the hydrosol only during the cooling phase to minimize unnecessary overheating of delicate aromatic components.
  • It is recommended to add during cooling (at a temperature below 40 °C).
  • Leave-on products: particularly suitable for facial mists, toners, serums, gels and creams; the final pH and microbiological stability of the finished product must always be checked.
  • Rinse-off products: can be used in shampoos, shower gels, foams and gentle cleansing products as part of the aqueous phase.
  • Formulation pH: always measure the final pH in the finished formulation and adjust it according to the preservative used, the active ingredients and the target product type.

Safety and storage

  • Intended for cosmetic use and for further processing in cosmetic formulations.
  • For sensitive skin or first-time use, we recommend performing a patch test on a small area of skin.
  • Avoid contamination of the contents – use clean tools, close the container immediately after use and do not pour used raw material back into the original container.
  • Store in a well-closed container, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
  • Storage in a cool, dry and dark place is suitable; hydrosols are aqueous raw materials that are sensitive to microbial contamination.
  • When manufacturing a finished cosmetic product, always verify the final pH, microbiological stability and suitability of the preservative system.
  • For products intended for children, pregnant women or very sensitive skin, it is necessary to assess the suitability of the entire formulation, not only of the hydrosol itself.

FAQ

Can lemon balm hydrosol replace lemon balm extract?

Not completely. Hydrosol is a gentle aqueous aromatic raw material from distillation, whereas extract is usually more concentrated and its composition depends on the solvent used. In a formulation they have different intensity and technological function.

Is lemon balm hydrosol suitable for cosmetics without added fragrance?

Yes, it can also be used in formulations without added fragrance. However, you must take into account that it has its own natural herbal scent, which may become noticeable in simple aqueous products.

Can it be used in a product with hyaluronic acid?

Yes, it is suitable as an aqueous base for gels and serums with hyaluronic acid. During preparation, it is important to allow the hyaluronic acid to hydrate sufficiently, to prepare the formulation hygienically and to use a suitable preservative.

Is it suitable for products with niacinamide?

Yes, it can form part of the aqueous phase in products with niacinamide. The final pH of the finished product needs to be adjusted so that it is suitable for the niacinamide, the preservative used and the target type of cosmetic product.

Can lemon balm hydrosol be used to disperse a clay mask?

Yes, it is suitable for mixing clay, herbal or powder masks immediately before application. A mixture prepared in this way is intended for immediate use and should not be stored without proven preservation.

Can it be added to an already finished cream or toner?

It is not recommended to add it afterwards to a finished preserved product without adjusting the formulation. This changes the ratio of water, preservative, active ingredients and pH, which can affect both stability and microbiological safety.
