The cotton wick is a practical accessory for the production of candles and scented decorations in both home and artisan settings. Natural cotton fibres ensure stable burning and even fragrance release, which makes the wick suitable for both liquid and more solid wax blends. In combination with suitable packaging, you can create an aesthetic and functional product that is ideal for gift sets, aroma decorations or interior accessories.
The cotton wick is used in combination with a suitably selected container – for example a glass vial, jar or pot – that withstands the temperature of melted wax. In candle production, classic closures or dispensers are usually not used, but the correct selection of packaging according to the type of wax and candle diameter is important. For candles, we recommend choosing packaging and vials from the Handymade portfolio so that they provide sufficient heat resistance and stability for safe burning.
Combinations of packaging and closures created directly on Handymade are tested and functional. However, for all combinations, we always recommend performing your own compatibility test (sealing, dosing and behaviour of the packaging in contact with the specific formulation).
All technical parameters of the packaging are listed in the attached Packaging Quality Certificate and in the product parameters.
The wick length should correspond to the height of the specific container, with a suitable reserve for fixing and trimming before the first lighting. Always adapt the wick to the final diameter of the candle – for wider jars, a stronger or multiple wick may be needed, while for narrower vials one medium-strength wick is usually sufficient. We recommend first making a trial pour in the selected packaging and testing the burning before the final production of a larger number of candles.
The cotton wick is generally suitable for the waxes most commonly used for home candle making, such as natural vegetable waxes, beeswax or standard candle blends. For blended waxes or a higher proportion of fragrance and essential oils, we recommend carrying out a burn test in the selected container to verify the burning rate, flame height and behaviour of the wick during the entire burning time.
The cotton wick itself is intended primarily for single use within one candle – after the candle has completely burned down, it is advisable to use a new wick. However, you can reuse the glass vials, jars or pots into which you insert the wick. The packaging can be reused if hygienic principles are observed: after the candle has burned down, remove wax residues, clean the packaging thoroughly and disinfect it before refilling with a suitable preparation, for example IPA 99% isopropyl alcohol or Ethanol 96% denatured plant-based. This ensures a clean surface of the container and better wax adhesion.
At the bottom of the container, you can use special wick holders or a suitable heat-resistant adhesive intended for candles, which stabilises the wick when pouring wax. The wick should be taut and vertical so that no irregularities arise when the wax solidifies. We recommend temporarily securing the upper part of the wick, for example with a wooden stick or clip, until the wax has completely hardened. Before the first lighting, trim the wick to the recommended length so that the flame is not too high.
After the candle has burned down, first allow the container to cool completely. Remove wax residues mechanically and clean the packaging. If you decide not to reuse the packaging, we recommend recycling it according to the material type indicated in the parameter table for the specific product on the Handymade website. Glass packaging is usually sorted into the glass container, plastic packaging into the plastic recycling container; always follow local separate collection rules. Metal parts (e.g. wick holders) should be separated and sorted separately if the collection system in your municipality allows it.
To select a suitable vial, jar or pot, we recommend using the advanced filter in the packaging categories. After clicking on the relevant category, you will find the filter at the top of the page, where you can sort packaging according to several criteria – for example by neck type, size, colour or material. Thanks to the combination of these parameters, you can easily choose packaging that will suit your wax, candle design and intended use.
