Product description

The cotton wick is a practical and ecological consumable material, ideal for creating natural candles and scented decorations in glass or tin containers. Thanks to its composition of natural fibres, it is suitable for use with various types of waxes and delicate aromatic blends, where it ensures stable burning and even fragrance release.

The pure cotton wick is designed to provide a reliable flame without excessive smoking when the length and container diameter are correctly chosen. It is suitable for home candle making, artisanal production and small product series, where consistent burning quality and the natural origin of the materials used are important.

Possible uses

  • Hand-poured candles in glass vials, jars and pots
  • Scented candles from vegetable waxes in decorative containers
  • Tealight and massage candles in smaller pots and containers
  • Ambient candles in recycled bottles and glasses
  • Scented decorations using natural essential oils and aromatic blends

Packaging advantages

  • Natural composition – the wick is made from cotton, without the use of a metal core, which supports cleaner candle burning.
  • Burning stability – when the wick is correctly trimmed, it contributes to an even flame and gradual wax consumption.
  • Good compatibility with waxes – suitable for most commonly used waxes (paraffin and vegetable blends) when the formulation is properly designed.
  • Universal use – it can be adapted to various types of containers, vials and pots, which facilitates the creation of original candle products.

Combining with closures and dispensers

The cotton wick is used in combination with a suitably chosen container – glass vial, jar or pot – that will withstand the temperature of hot wax and the flame. For candles with a lid it is important that the closure fits tightly, but is used only after the candle has completely cooled down, in order to prevent condensation and undesirable changes in fragrance. Combinations of packaging, jars and containers with related accessories that are created directly on Handymade are designed to be practical and functional for candle production.

For each new combination of container, wax, fragrance and wick type, we recommend carrying out your own test: verify the flame behaviour, burning rate, formation of wax residues and heating of the container walls. This way you will verify the safety and user comfort of the final product.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the correct length of cotton wick for a specific container?

The length of the cotton wick is adjusted to the height of the container and the width of the candle surface. The wick is usually anchored to the bottom of the container using a holder or a drop of wax and trimmed so that, after pouring and cooling of the wax, it protrudes above the surface by only a few millimetres. Before each lighting we recommend trimming the wick to approximately 5–7 mm, which limits smoking and ensures even burning.

Is this cotton wick suitable for vegetable waxes and fragrance oils?

The cotton wick is generally suitable for most common waxes, including many vegetable blends and candles containing fragrance oils. However, when changing the type of wax or the fragrance concentration, we always recommend a trial pour and burn test, during which you monitor the flame size, the wax melting rate and any smoke formation. Based on the result you can adjust the container diameter or the wick length.

Can I reuse the packaging in which I use a candle with this wick?

Containers, vials, jars and pots in which you use candles with a cotton wick can be reused after the candle has burned out, provided they are undamaged and free of cracks. Before refilling, it is important to clean the packaging thoroughly, remove wax residues and disinfect it with a suitable alcohol, for example with the products IPA 99 % isopropyl alcohol or Ethanol 96 % denatured vegetable. In this way you ensure the hygiene of the packaging also for further use, whether for candles or for other suitable contents.

How can I safely dispose of or recycle the packaging after the candle has burned out?

If you decide not to reuse the container, we recommend recycling it according to the type of material specified in the parameter table for the specific product on the Handymade website. Glass containers, after removal of wax residues and metal parts of the wick, are sorted into glass containers, plastic packaging into the appropriate plastic container and metal components into metal waste, if collected separately. When recycling, always follow local waste sorting rules and the recommendations given for the particular packaging type.

You offer many types of packaging – how do I find the right one for my product?

The most suitable packaging for candles or another cosmetic or decorative formulation can be found using the advanced filter in the packaging material categories. The advanced filter is located at the top of the page after clicking on the selected category and allows you to sort packaging by neck type, size, colour and material. Thanks to this you can quickly select vials, jars, pots or other containers that will correspond in dimensions and appearance to your concept and at the same time will be compatible with the planned use of the cotton wick.
