Product description

Sodium silicate is an inorganic compound of silicon and sodium produced by melting silicon (silicon dioxide) with soda at high temperatures. The result is a clear to viscous liquid with high alkalinity. In technical and cleaning formulations it serves as an effective stabilizer, pH regulator, soil-binding agent and anticorrosion agent. Thanks to its physico-chemical properties, it improves the efficiency of cleaning agents, increases their ability to remove grease and at the same time protects metal surfaces against corrosion.

Key benefits

  • Strongly alkaline – neutralizes acids and improves the cleaning performance of the formulation.
  • Stabilizes pH and increases the effectiveness of surfactants.
  • Binds metal ions, prevents limescale and deposit formation.
  • Acts as anticorrosion protection for metal surfaces.
  • Supports dispersion of soils and grease in water.

Suitable for products such as

  • Liquid and powder cleaning agents
  • Laundry detergents and dishwashing agents
  • Degreasers, sanitary and technical cleaning solutions
  • Rinse aids for dishwashers
  • Industrial and workshop cleaners

Use in formulation

  • Solubility: fully soluble in water
  • Dosage: usually 0.5 – 15 % depending on the type of formulation
  • Processing phase: added to the aqueous phase
  • Max. processing temperature: up to 80 °C
  • pH (1 % solution): 11–13 (strongly alkaline)

Sodium silicate is a universal stabilizer and pH adjuster that increases the quality and shelf life of cosmetic products.

Safety rating of the raw material according to EWG:

According to the official EWG database, this raw material has the rating: 1–2 (low risk).

FAQ

1. What is sodium silicate used for?
It is used mainly as a stabilizer, pH regulator and protective agent in cleaning, detergent and technical formulations.

2. Is it suitable for cosmetic products?
Not commonly. In cosmetics it is used only exceptionally and at very low concentrations, for example in lifting serums.

3. Is it safe for the skin?
No, direct action on the skin can be irritating. It is recommended to use it only in rinse-off or technical products.

4. How should it be dosed correctly?
Usually 0.5 – 5 %, depending on the desired alkalinity and the type of cleaning agent.

5. How should it be stored?
Store in a closed container, in a dry place, away from moisture and acidic substances.
