Urea is basically urea. It is a synthetically produced substance made from natural gas, water and air.

Because of its emollient and moisturising properties, it is very often added, especially to dermatological products. It is a very popular ingredient in foot creams designed to soften the skin, to moisturise the skin and keep it moist and also for skin affected by eczema - neurodermatitis or scaly skin.

However, urea can also cause a sensitive reaction, especially on the skin of young children, so it is not recommended for children under 6 years of age.

The only pitfall of using urea in cosmetic products is its low stability. Its decomposition produces ammonia relatively unnoticed, which raises the pH of the skin to a critical value of 9. However, if you use suitable stabilisers, the decomposition of urea is completely prevented. It is customary to use a so-called buffer in cosmetic products.

A buffer is a buffer solution - it is a solution of an acid or base and its salt that is able to maintain a stable pH within a certain range. The stable optimum pH is 6.2, but it is necessary to keep it between 4 and 8. A buffer of 5 % of the total weight of the product is added to maintain it. For example, a lactate buffer is made by mixing 1.6% lactic acid (80%) and 5% sodium lactate (60%). It is added to the final product in the cooling phase after the pH of the product has been adjusted. The urea is added to the product after the buffer.

Urea is water soluble and oil insoluble.
