Cotton wick represents a reliable and stable choice for the production of natural candles in both smaller and larger containers. Thanks to its composition and structure, it is suitable for use with various waxes and blends, while ensuring even burning and a controlled flame. It is ideal for candles poured into glass containers, tins, decorative jars or other packaging intended for candles, where consistent functionality and safe burning are important.
Adjust the length of the cotton wick to the height of the container so that after pouring the wax and curing, the wick remains slightly longer than the target working length. Before the first lighting, always trim it to approximately 5–7 mm. For wider containers, a larger number of wicks may be needed to ensure that the wax surface melts evenly. We recommend creating a test series with different lengths and numbers of wicks and recording the burning results for future production.
The key to clean burning is a correctly selected wick diameter relative to the container diameter, an accurately weighed ratio of wax to fragrance, and regular trimming of the wick. The wick should not be too long – it is recommended to shorten it to approximately 5–7 mm before each lighting. Excessive smoking can also be caused by too high a dosage of fragrance oil or incompatible additives, so it is important to carry out a burn test in advance with the specific formulation.
The cotton wick is primarily intended for single use within the lifetime of one candle. However, if a sufficiently long and mechanically undamaged piece of wick remains in the container, you can refill the container with wax, but we always recommend checking the stability of the wick and the course of burning by a test lighting. The candle container can be used repeatedly if hygiene principles are followed, and for cosmetic or decorative use it is necessary to clean and disinfect the packaging thoroughly before refilling. For disinfection, we particularly recommend isopropyl alcohol IPA 99 % or plant-based ethanol Ethanol 96 % denatured, which help remove wax and fragrance residues from the surface of the container.
When testing new formulations, we recommend a systematic approach: choose a specific container, the type and ratio of wax, the exact dose of fragrance and the wick used. From each combination, make at least one test candle and, during burning, monitor the behaviour of the flame, the rate of wax melting, smoking and the formation of a “tunnel” or wax residues on the sides of the container. Always carry out the test on a stable, non-combustible surface, away from draughts and at a safe distance from flammable materials. Record your observations so that you can reliably reproduce the successful combination in production.
To quickly find a suitable bottle, jar or candle container, we recommend using the advanced filter in the packaging material categories. The advanced filter is located at the top of the page after clicking on a specific category and allows you to sort the packaging according to several parameters – especially neck type, size, colour and material. Thanks to this, you can easily narrow your selection to the packaging that best matches your formulation, visual style and the way the final product is used.
