Product description

Vanilla CO₂-to extract with a 26 % vanillin content is a concentrated aromatic extract obtained from vanilla pods, most commonly from the species Vanilla planifolia, by means of supercritical CO₂ extraction. In this technology, carbon dioxide in its supercritical state is used as the extraction medium, which makes it possible to gently extract aromatic, resinous and waxy components without the use of common organic solvents.
The designation CO₂-to means total extract, i.e. complete extract. In contrast to CO₂-se select extracts, it contains a broader spectrum of naturally occurring substances, including vanillin, volatile aromatic compounds, resins, waxes and other lipophilic components. Thanks to an approximately 26 % vanillin content, the extract has an intense, warm, sweet and typically vanilla aromatic profile.
In cosmetic formulations it is used mainly as a natural aromatic component in anhydrous, oil-based, balm and perfumery compositions. It gives products a subtle gourmand character, softens sharper fragrance notes and combines very well with citrus, floral, spicy, woody and resinous scents.

Key benefits

  • High vanillin content – approximately 26 %, suitable for an intense vanilla aromatic profile.
  • CO₂-to total extract – contains a broader spectrum of lipophilic aromatic, waxy and resinous components.
  • Natural origin – obtained from vanilla pods by gentle supercritical CO₂ extraction.
  • Intense fragrance – warm, sweet, soft, balsamic and typically vanilla.
  • Suitable for anhydrous cosmetic products – fits well into oil-based and balm formulations.
  • Helps round off fragrance compositions – softens sharp, acidic, spicy or overly fresh notes.
  • Concentrated aromatic raw material – used at low dosage levels according to the required fragrance intensity.

Suitable for products such as

  • lip balms, stick balms and anhydrous protective products,
  • body butters, whipped butters and massage butters,
  • oil perfumes, perfume balms and solid perfumes,
  • body and massage oils, oil serums and bath oils,
  • soaps, syndet products and solid cleansing bars,
  • creams and emulsions, if the extract is premixed into the oil phase,
  • aromatic cosmetic compositions with a gourmand, warming or balsamic character.

Use in formulation

  • Vanilla CO₂-to extract is soluble in oils and fats.
  • It is miscible with vegetable oils, butters, waxes, oil macerates, perfume oils and lipophilic components.
  • It is compatible with anhydrous formulations, balms, ointment bases, oil serums and emulsions with an oil phase.
  • For emulsions, it is recommended to first disperse it in the oil phase or in a small portion of a suitable vegetable oil.
  • It is recommended to add it during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).
  • At higher concentration it may affect the colour, fragrance and final sensorial profile of the product.
  • The recommended dosage depends on the type of product, the intensity of the desired fragrance and the overall perfuming of the formulation; with concentrated extracts one usually works with low dosage levels.

Safety and storage

  • Use in accordance with the recommended dosage for the given type of cosmetic product.
  • Before broader use in the final product, it is advisable to prepare a test batch and assess the fragrance, colour, solubility and stability of the formulation.
  • When used in lip products or products intended for sensitive areas, it is advisable to work with a lower dosage.
  • Store tightly closed, in a dry, cool place and protected from direct sunlight.
  • Protect from air, moisture and excessive heat in order to preserve the aromatic profile of the extract as well as possible.
  • When working with a concentrated aromatic raw material, use clean tools and avoid contamination of the contents.

FAQ

Is vanilla CO₂-to extract suitable as a stand-alone fragrance for cosmetics?

Yes, it can also be used on its own, especially in balms, oils and solid perfumes. In practice, however, it is often combined with other fragrance components, because it helps to give the composition depth, softness and a sweet undertone.

Can vanilla CO₂ extract discolour the finished product?

Yes, at higher dosage or in light-coloured formulations it may slightly affect the final shade of the product. For white creams, balms and soaps it is advisable to first prepare a small test batch.

Is vanilla CO₂-to extract suitable for natural perfuming?

Yes, it is suitable for naturally oriented perfuming, especially as a sweet, warming and fixative note. It combines well with benzoin, tonka, citrus, rose, lavender, cardamom, cinnamon, sandalwood and patchouli.

Is there a difference between vanilla CO₂ extract and vanilla fragrance?

Yes. Vanilla CO₂ extract is a concentrated plant extract obtained from vanilla, whereas vanilla fragrance may be a separately composed perfumery blend. CO₂ extract has a naturally more complex, less candy-like and more balsamic character.

Why can vanilla CO₂-to extract appear thick or more solid?

Total CO₂ extracts may also contain waxy and resinous components, and therefore they can be thicker than common liquid fragrance raw materials. Before use they may be gently tempered in a water bath at low temperature and then evenly dispersed into the oil phase.

Is vanilla CO₂ extract suitable for products with citrus fragrances?

Yes, with citrus notes it creates balanced sweet-fresh compositions. Vanilla helps to soften the more acidic character of citrus and gives the fragrance a warmer, creamier dry-down.
