Stabilo cotton wick is a high-quality wick made from pure cotton, intended for both professional and hobby candle making. Thanks to its even burn and stable flame, it is suitable for a wide range of waxes and candle shapes, from smaller decorative candles to more massive ones. The fine yet strong cotton structure ensures reliable ignition and consistent burning without excessive smoking when properly combined with a suitable wax blend.
The choice of wick depends on the diameter and shape of the candle, the type of wax and the amount of added fragrance or colour components. In general, the larger the candle diameter, the stronger or more numerous the wicks that are required. We recommend starting from the product parameters and then making a test pour and a test burn, during which you monitor the width of the wax pool, flame height and any smoking. Based on the result you can slightly adjust the wick length, or for very wide containers use two or more wicks.
The wick should be trimmed to approximately 5–7 mm before each new lighting of the candle. Ongoing trimming helps to maintain a stable flame, reduces the risk of smoking and soot formation on the container walls and extends the candle’s lifespan. If the flame is visibly smoking, is too high, or a “mushroom” of unburned material forms at the wick tip, the wick needs to be trimmed a little more. Always extinguish the candle in a safe way and trim only after the wax has cooled.
The cotton wick is a universal choice for most commonly used waxes, such as paraffin, soy, rapeseed and blended waxes. However, for highly fragranced or strongly coloured candles it is advisable to carry out your own test, because a higher content of fragrance and colourants can change the flammability of the wax and the flame behaviour. Different compositions of wax blends may require a slight adjustment of wick length or a change in candle diameter. Before series production it is therefore important to test the final formula under real conditions of use.
You can use the cotton wick in candles poured into glass bottles, jars, pots, ceramic containers or metal packaging intended for candle production, as well as in free-standing moulded candles poured into moulds. For container candles, it is important that the container has heat-resistant properties and sufficient width to allow the wax to melt evenly. For design moulds, pay particular attention to the diameter at the widest point and the overall height of the candle to ensure a stable flame and safe burning without wax overflowing over the rim.
To select a suitable bottle, jar or other packaging, you can use the extended filter, which you will find at the top of the page after clicking on the relevant packaging category. The filter allows you to clearly sort products by neck type, size, colour and material, so you can easily choose packaging that will suit your candle or cosmetic formulation. We recommend combining filtering by material and neck with the planned type of closure or additional accessories, so that the resulting combination is not only aesthetic, but also fully functional and safe in use.
