Product description

Sodium Benzoate is technically the sodium salt of benzoic acid, also known as sodium benzoate. It is produced by neutralising benzoic acid with a suitable sodium base, most commonly sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate, followed by crystallisation, drying and processing into a powder or granular form.
This product is supplied as a technical grade. It is not declared as a cosmetic, pharmaceutical or food-grade raw material and is therefore intended primarily for technical, cleaning, laundry, industrial and non-cosmetic use. Do not use it as a replacement for a cosmetic preservative in cosmetic products intended for the skin.

Key benefits

  • Water-soluble sodium salt of benzoic acid, suitable for aqueous technical systems.
  • Technical auxiliary raw material for non-cosmetic formulations, especially where a water phase is involved.
  • Suitable for cleaning and laundry blends as an auxiliary component of technical grade.
  • Good compatibility with aqueous solutions, where it can be incorporated easily without the need for heating to high temperatures.
  • Stable powder raw material with easy dosing and good blendability in both dry and aqueous mixtures.
  • Usable in more acidic technical systems, where a more effective undissociated form of benzoic acid may be released from sodium benzoate.
  • Also suitable as an auxiliary component in the development of non-cosmetic aqueous preparations, where it is necessary to work with a soluble organic salt.

Suitable for products such as

  • technical aqueous solutions and auxiliary technological mixtures,
  • cleaning products for non-cosmetic use,
  • laundry blends and auxiliary components in laundry formulations,
  • dry powder blends that are subsequently dissolved in water,
  • technical concentrates with a water phase,
  • workshop and utility cleaning solutions,
  • non-cosmetic DIY production projects where cosmetic quality of the input raw material is not required,
  • educational and test formulations focused on working with soluble salts.

Use in formulation

  • Sodium Benzoate is soluble in water and is incorporated into the water phase by direct mixing until it is completely dissolved.
  • It is miscible with aqueous solutions, dry free-flowing blends, carbonates, citrates, certain surfactants and other common components of technical cleaning and laundry formulations.
  • In dry blends, we recommend first mixing it thoroughly with the other powder components to ensure uniform distribution throughout the formulation.
  • In laundry and cleaning preparations it can be used as a technical auxiliary component; its suitability depends on the overall composition, pH, concentration, water content and type of application.
  • The effectiveness of the benzoate system is most pronounced in a more acidic environment. In highly alkaline blends, typical for example of some washing powders, it behaves mainly as a soluble sodium salt and cannot be regarded as a universally effective preservative component.
  • It is compatible with many aqueous technical systems, but stability, pH, solubility and the behaviour of the complete formulation must always be verified in a small trial batch.
  • When combining with oxidising, strongly alkaline or strongly acidic components, we recommend carrying out a technological test, as the final behaviour depends on the specific composition.
  • It is recommended to add it during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C), especially if the formulation contains temperature-sensitive components or volatile substances.
  • Since this is a technical grade material, do not use it as a preservative in creams, toners, shampoos, shower gels, colour cosmetics or other cosmetic products intended for skin contact.

Physical properties

  • Appearance: white to almost white powder or granules.
  • Nature: sodium salt of benzoic acid.
  • Solubility: readily soluble in water.
  • Solubility in oils: practically insoluble in the oil phase.
  • Behaviour in the formulation: dissolves in the water phase; in dry blends it behaves as a free-flowing powder component.
  • Type of use: technical raw material for non-cosmetic applications.

Safety and storage

  • Store in a well-closed container in a dry and cool place, away from direct sunlight and sources of moisture.
  • Avoid the formation and inhalation of dust during handling.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area and use appropriate protective equipment when transferring larger quantities.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
  • When used in laundry and cleaning blends, follow the safety recommendations for the other components of the formulation as well, especially for alkaline substances, acids, oxidising components and surfactants.
  • The product is intended for technical use. Do not use it in food, medicines or cosmetic products intended for application to the skin.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

FAQ

What is the difference between technical and cosmetic Sodium Benzoate?

Technical Sodium Benzoate is not declared according to cosmetic requirements for purity, documentation, specification and safety assessment for cosmetic products. Cosmetic grade must meet requirements suitable for raw materials used in products applied to the skin.

Can I use technical Sodium Benzoate as a preservative in a cream?

No. This product is of technical grade and is therefore not recommended for use in creams, toners, shampoos or other cosmetic products. For cosmetics, it is necessary to use a raw material with cosmetic documentation and an appropriate safety assessment.

Is Sodium Benzoate suitable for washing powders?

In technical and non-cosmetic laundry blends, it can be included as an auxiliary powder component. However, it must be taken into account that conventional washing powders are alkaline, which influences its behaviour and limits its significance as a preservative component.

Why is pH important for sodium benzoate?

pH affects the balance between sodium benzoate and benzoic acid. In a more acidic environment a higher proportion of undissociated benzoic acid is formed, which is significantly more important in preservation systems than the sodium salt itself.

Can Sodium Benzoate be dissolved directly in water?

Yes, Sodium Benzoate is readily soluble in water. When preparing an aqueous solution, we recommend adding it gradually while stirring so that it dissolves evenly and without clumps.

Is it also suitable for oil-based blends?

It is not suitable as an oil-soluble component because it is practically insoluble in oils. If it is used in a formulation with an oil phase, it must be incorporated into the water phase or into dry powder blends, depending on the type of product.

Can it be combined with soda or sodium percarbonate?

In dry technical blends it can be combined with soda or sodium percarbonate, but it is recommended to carry out a small trial batch. The final behaviour depends on the moisture level, pH, ratio of components and storage conditions of the blend.
