Stabilo cotton wick without sustainer – size 4 is a high-quality cotton wick intended for both professional and hobby production of candles and wax products. Thanks to the stable fibre structure, it provides reliable burning, even glowing and a consistent flame with various types of waxes. It is particularly suitable for small and medium-sized containers, where clean burning and predictable candle behaviour are important.
The high-quality cotton material without a sustainer makes it easy to individually adjust the wick length and fix it according to the specific type of mould or container. The wick is ideal for makers who are looking for a stable, easy-to-test and craft-proven component for their candles in jars, pots, decorative containers or gift packaging.
When making candles, the wick can be combined with various types of containers – from glass jars through metal pots to decorative bottles and tins with lids. When choosing a specific container, we recommend using compatible packaging available on Handymade.sk and always thoroughly test the wick behaviour in combination with the given wax, diameter and container type.
Combinations of packaging and components that are created directly on Handymade are tested and functional. However, for all combinations we always recommend carrying out your own compatibility test – in particular the behaviour of the wick in contact with the specific wax blend, fragrance and colourant.
All technical parameters of the packaging are stated in the attached Packaging Quality Certificate and in the product parameters.
Always adjust the wick length according to the height of the container and the type of wax. After fixing the wick in the centre of the container, leave some extra length above the planned wax level and, after the first burn, trim the wick to the recommended working length (usually 5–7 mm). We recommend preparing a test series of candles with different wick lengths and checking the evenness of burning and flame behaviour under real conditions.
The wick can be used with various types of waxes, such as vegetable, paraffin or mixed wax blends. Since each formulation has different viscosity, density and burning behaviour, it is always necessary to carry out your own test. Monitor in particular the flame size, the speed of wax melting, residue formation and any smoking, and adjust the wick length or candle diameter according to the results.
You can anchor a wick without a sustainer using special wick holders, metal sustainers with a hole, adhesive dots, silicone bases or mechanical fixing at the bottom part of the mould. We recommend stabilising the upper part of the wick with holders, skewers or clips placed on the edge of the container. Before pouring the wax, check that the wick is centred and taut so that burning proceeds evenly.
The container in which you pour the candle (jar, tin, cup) can be reused if hygiene principles are followed. Before refilling, we recommend removing wax residues, washing the packaging thoroughly and then disinfecting it with an appropriate product, for example IPA 99 % isopropyl alcohol or ethanol 96 % denatured, vegetable. This will ensure a clean surface free of impurities that could affect wax adhesion and burning quality. The wick itself is generally single-use and it is advisable to use a new piece when making a new candle.
If you decide not to use the candle container or packaging any further, we recommend recycling it in accordance with the material type specified in the parameters of the specific product on Handymade.sk. Glass containers are usually sorted as glass after cleaning off wax residues, metal cups as metals, and plastic packaging into the appropriate plastic container according to the labelling. Wicks and small wax residues should be disposed of in municipal waste unless otherwise specified in the local collection system.
When choosing a suitable bottle, jar or tin for candles, we recommend using the advanced filter in the packaging categories. It is located at the top of the page after clicking on a specific category and allows filtering by several parameters – in particular by neck type, size, colour and material. Thanks to the filter, you can quickly choose packaging that will correspond to your wax formulation and design concept and at the same time verify its compatibility with other components.
