Aesculus hippocastanum L. — horse chestnut — is a tree originally native to the Balkan Peninsula, today widespread throughout Europe. Horse chestnut seeds are among the best scientifically studied raw materials in cosmetic dermatology. The key active component is β-escin — a complex of triterpenoid saponins with a precisely documented mechanism of action. Escin inhibits enzymatic degradation of mucopolysaccharides in the capillary wall, thereby reducing its permeability and preventing fluid leakage into the surrounding tissue. In addition to escin, the seeds contain flavonoids (quercetrin and its glycosides) with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and condensed tannins with astringent and firming effects.Active aqueous extract from organically cultivated horse chestnut seeds is produced by controlled aqueous extraction. The active plant fraction represents 6.25% of the total volume. Production complies with the COSMOS Organic certification.

The product is not classified as hazardous according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP). It does not contain parabens, nanomaterials, GMO ingredients or residual solvents. β-escin is a complex of triterpenoid saponins specific to horse chestnut seeds. Unlike most plant extracts, it has a precisely documented biochemical mechanism: it inhibits the enzymes hyaluronidase and elastase, which break down the structural components of the capillary wall. The result is a reduction in capillary permeability and limitation of fluid leakage into tissue — which explains its pronounced efficacy in edema and weak venous vessels.
Yes. The extract is compatible with most common water-soluble active substances — niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, panthenol and ascorbate forms of vitamin C. With AHA/BHA acids there is no compatibility problem, as the extract is stable in an acidic environment — the low pH of exfoliants will not affect its efficacy.
Only negligibly. At an extract dosage of 5% you introduce into the formulation approximately 0.01% Sodium Benzoate and 0.005% Potassium Sorbate — far below the usual effective concentrations of these preservatives (Sodium Benzoate effective from approx. 0.1%). The preservative system of the final product must be designed in the standard way, without taking the contribution of the extract into account.
No. EW002 is a purely aqueous extract — the components are water, the active fraction of horse chestnut seeds, citric acid as a pH regulator and a preservative system (Sodium Benzoate + Potassium Sorbate). Alcohol and other organic solvents are not used in production and are not present in the product.
The certified raw material meets the organic requirements of the COSMOS standard — which is a necessary condition for certification of the final product. However, the certification of the resulting cosmetic product itself depends on the entire composition of the formula and on the chosen certification body. One organic raw material is not sufficient to certify the entire product.
The aqueous extract (EW002) captures hydrophilic components — escin, flavonoids and oligosaccharides. Oil extracts (macerates in vegetable oils) capture the lipophilic fraction — phytosterols and other oil-soluble compounds. For vasoprotective and anti-edematous effects, the carrier of efficacy is the aqueous extract, since escin is water-soluble. Both types are not mutually exclusive — they can be combined in an emulsion.
