Product description

A ready-made bottle and closure set for toners, mists and sprays: a tall apothecary bottle made of amber glass with a nominal volume of 50 ml and a black plastic sprayer with a dip tube. Amber glass limits the ingress of light, so it suits contents that light can damage – hydrosols, facial toners and mists with active ingredients, hair sprays or alcohol-based scented waters. The sprayer produces a fine mist, so the product is applied evenly and without the hands touching the contents.

The slim, tall shape of the bottle sits well in the hand and fits into a handbag or travel bag. The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics; the declaration of conformity and certificates for both components can be found with the product.

What the set is suitable for

  • Facial toners and hydrosols – low-viscosity water-based contents spray best, and the mist settles evenly on the skin.
  • Facial and body mists – light water-based formulations with solubilised active ingredients, refreshing sprays for summer or after sun exposure.
  • Hair sprays – leave-in conditioning sprays, shine sprays or lower-viscosity styling sprays.
  • Scented waters and alcohol-based sprays – the sprayer is also commonly used for alcohol-based contents; with your own formulation we recommend verifying how the plastic parts behave with the specific composition.
  • Textile and room sprays – water-alcohol fresheners with fragrance substances, provided the ingredients are properly solubilised.

What is worth knowing about volume

With packaging you will come across two figures for volume. The nominal volume is the volume the packaging is intended for under normal filling. The total brimful volume is the physical volume all the way to the neck and is somewhat larger. The difference between them is a reserve for the sprayer's dip tube and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The packaging is filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim – otherwise part of the contents is forced out when the sprayer is screwed on and the neck is left soiled.

The sprayer's dip tube reaches almost to the bottom of the bottle so that the contents can be used up as completely as possible. Check it before filling and, when screwing it on, make sure it does not bend against the wall of the packaging – a bent tube draws in air and the sprayer starts to “spit” instead of producing a mist.

The sprayer and the properties of the contents

The sprayer mechanism is designed for low-viscosity liquid contents – water, hydrosols, water-alcohol solutions and light toners. The thicker the contents, the worse they spray. Thickened serums, gels and pure plant oils are not dispersed into a mist by the sprayer but are forced out in drops, or it clogs. If you want to incorporate an oil component into a spray, a solubiliser is used, or a two-phase spray that is shaken before use. Even then we recommend checking whether the nozzle stays clear after several days.

Essential oils in common cosmetic doses generally do not harm the sprayer. However, higher concentrations and pure essential oils can place long-term strain on the plastic parts. Likewise, for contents with a high proportion of solvents we recommend a trial fill and a tightness check after several weeks.

Water-based contents in the sprayer will not last without preservation – even though the skin does not touch the contents, air is drawn into the bottle with every press. Preserve hydrosols and toners according to the rules for water-based products and follow clean filling practices.

Preparation, cleaning and reuse

Before the first fill, wash the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely neck-down. Disinfect the sprayer by flushing it – it is enough to spray alcohol through it several times and then clean water, so that no residues remain in the mechanism. Residual moisture in the bottle would dilute the contents and could disrupt the preservation system.

Glass is resistant to most cosmetic ingredients and can be reused. For the next fill proceed the same way as for the first – wash, disinfect, dry. The sprayer is reusable after thorough flushing. After thick or strongly fragranced contents, however, we recommend replacing it with a new one, because fragrance and deposits remain in the mechanism.

Glass does not tolerate sudden changes in temperature: do not fill hot contents into a cold bottle or vice versa. Let the contents cool to room temperature and only then fill.

Label and recycling

Light or kraft labels contrast well with amber glass. Bear in mind that the label of a cosmetic product must contain the mandatory information – with small packaging it often has to be split between the label and an enclosed leaflet.

At the end of its life the packaging is sorted by material: glass with glass, the plastic sprayer with plastics. Before recycling, separate the components and rinse the bottle.

The standalone glass bottle has certification for direct contact with food. The set with the sprayer, however, is intended for cosmetics, because the sprayer does not have food-grade certification. If you need the bottle for food contents, combine it with a closure that is also approved for contact with food.

Choosing a closure

The sprayer in this set is chosen so that it seals with the neck of the bottle. If you prefer a different closure – a cap, a dropper or a pump – choose according to the neck type stated in the parameters; closures with the same neck type and other ready-made combinations can be found in the Handymade range. With your own combination we recommend verifying the tightness, dosing and behaviour of the packaging with the specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Does the amber glass of the bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass significantly reduces the transmission of light, especially its short-wavelength part, which most accelerates the oxidation and breakdown of sensitive ingredients. Hydrosols, vitamin toners or scented waters therefore remain stable longer in an amber bottle than in clear glass. Light, however, is not the only factor – also protect the contents from heat and ensure sufficient preservation.
Can oil be sprayed with the sprayer on the bottle?
No, this sprayer will not disperse pure plant or oil contents into a mist. The mechanism is intended for low-viscosity water-based and water-alcohol contents; oil is forced out in drops or clogs the nozzle. For oil sprays, two-phase formulations that are shaken, or solubilised oils in low concentration, are used – always after a trial fill.
How many ml should be filled into a bottle with a nominal volume of 50 ml?
Fill to approximately the nominal volume, i.e. 50 ml, not to the brim. The remaining space up to the neck is a reserve for the sprayer's dip tube and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. If the bottle is overfilled, part of the contents is forced out through the neck when the sprayer is screwed on and the thread is left soiled, which impairs the seal.
Is the bottle-and-sprayer set suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. The standalone glass bottle has certification for direct contact with food; the sprayer does not, so food use does not apply to the set. For homemade oils, syrups or infusions, use the bottle with a closure that is also approved for contact with food.
How to prepare the glass bottle and the sprayer before the first fill?
Wash the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely neck-down. Spray alcohol through the sprayer several times and then clean water, so that no residues remain in the mechanism. Complete drying is important – residual water would dilute the contents and weaken the preservation system of a water-based product.
Will the sprayer withstand alcohol-based scented waters and sprays?
Yes, a sprayer with a plastic mechanism is commonly used for water-alcohol contents and works reliably at the usual proportion of alcohol in scented waters. With a high concentration of essential oils or other solvents we recommend a trial fill and a check of the tightness and clearance of the nozzle after several weeks, because more aggressive ingredients can place long-term strain on the plastic.
