Product description

Cosmetics that are applied drop by drop are best filled into packaging that releases exactly as much as is needed. This amber glass medicine bottle with a glossy white and silver pump is intended for face serums, treatment oils, light emulsions and fluids. The dark glass limits the amount of light reaching the contents, and the pump releases the same small dose with every press, so the rest of the product stays in the bottle without contact with fingers.

The 50 ml volume is typical of a serum or face oil that lasts several weeks of use. The medicine bottle with a narrow neck sits comfortably in the hand and takes up little space on a shelf. The set is supplied as a ready-made pair of bottle and closure. The threads of the bottle and the pump match, so you do not need to select them separately.

What the set is suitable for

  • Serums and fluids – water-based and oil-based serums with low viscosity pass through the pump without problems, and one dose corresponds to the amount applied to the face.
  • Face and body oils – amber glass limits the amount of light reaching the contents, and a pump also limits exposure to air compared with opening a cap.
  • Light emulsions and milks – liquid O/W creams dispense comfortably. The pump may not draw up thicker creams, so test them on a trial sample first.
  • Samples and travel sizes – 50 ml is enough for testing a new formulation with customers or for packing into a cosmetics bag.

The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact, but the pump does not, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.

How the pump works

The pump is screwed onto the neck of the bottle and the tube reaches into the contents. Pressing the head draws up the liquid and releases a dose of approximately 0.14 ml. This amount suits concentrated products, of which only a few drops are applied. With thicker contents the dose may vary slightly. The first presses after filling only serve to fill the tube.

The glossy white and silver surface combines PP plastic with aluminium, so the closure looks good even on products intended for sale.

Before fitting the pump for the first time, shorten its tube so that it reaches just above the bottom of the bottle and does not bend. A bent tube draws up the product less effectively.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the volume the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The total brimful volume is the physical volume up to the neck and can be found in the parameters. The difference between them forms a reserve for the tube and the body of the pump and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The bottle is therefore filled up to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If it were filled to the neck, the contents would be pushed out when the pump is screwed on.

Good to know

  • Preparation before filling – wash the bottle and the pump before first use, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Residual water would dilute anhydrous products.
  • Viscosity of the contents – the pump is designed for liquid to slightly thick products. Gels with high viscosity and solid creams are not suitable for it, so test the dispensing on a trial sample.
  • Leak-tightness during transport – when shipping the product or travelling, check that the contents do not leak out when the bottle is turned upside down or shaken, or secure the head if necessary.
  • Reuse – the glass bottle can be refilled after washing and disinfection. The pump is harder to clean, as product residues remain in the tube and the valve, so we recommend a new one when you change the formulation.
  • Closures – other closures with the same neck type and ready-made bottle and closure combinations can be found in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, check the leak-tightness, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.
  • Recycling – the glass bottle belongs in glass recycling, and the pump, as a combination of plastic and metal, belongs in plastics according to local collection rules.

Essential oils and fragrance compositions at a higher concentration may affect the plastic parts of the pump over time. With products containing a high proportion of fragrance ingredients, check that the pump does not lose its function.

Frequently asked questions

Does an amber glass bottle with a pump protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass limits the amount of light reaching the contents. For oils, serums with sensitive active ingredients and products with essential oils, this makes a difference compared with clear glass. However, glass does not replace an antioxidant in the formulation or storage out of direct sunlight.
Is the pump on the 50 ml glass medicine bottle suitable for thick creams?
No, the pump with a small dose is intended for liquid and slightly thick products. It draws up serums, oils, milks and light emulsions without problems. With thicker gel or cream textures it may draw in air or dispense unevenly. Fill a trial sample and check how the contents behave after several days.
How much product fits into a 50 ml glass bottle with a pump?
It is filled up to the nominal volume of 50 ml, although the total brimful volume of the bottle is larger. The difference forms a reserve for the tube and the body of the pump, which take up space in the neck once screwed on, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. If the bottle is overfilled, part of the product is pushed out as soon as the closure is fitted.
Can the glass medicine bottle with a pump be reused?
Yes, the glass bottle can be refilled after washing and disinfection with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. The pump can be rinsed with warm water and left to dry, but product residues in the tube and the valve are difficult to remove. When you change the formulation, especially from an oil-based to a water-based one, we recommend using a new pump.
Is the glass bottle with a pump set suitable for food, for example homemade oils?
No, the set as a whole is not approved for contact with food. The glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact, but the plastic pump has no such declaration. The bottle and pump set is therefore intended for cosmetic products, for which each component has been declared suitable.
