The size of the wooden wick needs to be adapted to the diameter of the container and the type of wax used. We recommend first testing smaller trial batches of candles in specific jars, pots or cups and observing whether the flame evenly melts the wax to the edges. When changing the wax blend (for example, adding a higher amount of fragrance or colourant) it is advisable to repeat the test to verify the behaviour of the wick in the actual formulation.

The wooden wick is primarily intended for single use within one burning cycle of the candle. The packaging itself – for example a glass bottle, jar or pot – can, however, be reused if hygiene principles are followed. Before refilling, the container must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, ideally using suitable products such as isopropyl alcohol or denatured plant ethanol. This ensures surface cleanliness and minimises the risk of undesirable reactions between the residues of the original contents and the new filling.

For testing we recommend filling the container with the usual working volume of wax and letting the candle cure according to the wax manufacturer's recommendations. Then carry out a burning test in several cycles, during which you monitor the flame height, the rate of wax melting, tunnelling and any smoking. Always test in a safe environment, away from draughts and flammable materials. If the flame is too small or too large, it is necessary to adjust the width of the wick or the composition of the wax blend.

After the candle has burned out, first remove the remaining wax and the wooden wick from the container. The wick itself and wax residues usually belong in mixed waste. The container – for example a glass bottle, jar or pot – can, after mechanical cleaning, be placed in the appropriate sorted collection according to the material specified in the parameters of the specific packaging on Handymade. If the packaging is glass, place it in a glass container; for plastic components follow the material marking in the product parameter table. Always follow local waste sorting rules.
