The size of the spiral wooden wick needs to be chosen according to the diameter of the container and the type of wax used. For wider containers a wider or double wick may be necessary, while for narrower containers a smaller wick is required. We recommend creating a test candle in the same container, with the same wax and fragrance component, and observing the behaviour of the flame, the rate of wax melting and the width of the wax pool. According to the test results, the wick size can be fine-tuned.

The spiral wooden wick can be used with various types of waxes such as soy, vegetable or paraffin waxes. However, each wax burns slightly differently, so it is important to carry out a trial pour and check whether the flame is not too weak or, conversely, too intense. Burning is also influenced by the amount and type of fragrance component, any colourants and the diameter of the container used.

The wooden wick is primarily intended for single use in a specific candle, therefore when producing a new candle a new piece of wick is normally used. However, if you are working with a container that you wish to refill repeatedly, the container itself can be reused provided that hygiene principles are observed. Before refilling, the container must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, for example using IPA or ethanol products available on Handymade: IPA 99 % isopropyl alcohol or Ethanol 96 % denatured vegetable. Only then is wax with a new wooden wick poured into the clean container.

After the candle has burned down, allow the wax to cool completely and carefully remove the remaining wax. Dispose of the spiral wooden wick itself and the metal holder (if used) in accordance with local municipal waste regulations. Recycle the container according to the material stated in the parameters of the specific packaging on Handymade – for example, place a glass bottle or jar into the glass container, and a plastic package into the appropriate plastic container.
