Product description

Menthol is obtained by fractional distillation and crystallization of the essential oil from plants of the mint genus, most commonly from the plant Menta arvensis. It consists of pure, colorless to white needle-like crystals with a typical refreshing minty scent. In cosmetics, it is valued for its local cooling, analgesic, and mildly refreshing effects.

Key benefits:

  • Intense cooling effect that provides an immediate refreshing sensation on the skin.
  • Mild numbing (analgesic) effects, suitable in cases of irritation or muscle tension.
  • Stimulates local microcirculation, which supports a feeling of relief and freshness.
  • The characteristic mint fragrance gives products a fresh, “clean” atmosphere.

Suitable for products such as:

  • Gels after insect bites, sprays and balms
  • Cooling body gels, creams and sprays
  • Lip balms, mouthwashes and dental gels
  • Refreshing shampoos and hair treatments
  • Shower gels and products for summer care

Use in formulation:

  • Solubility: insoluble in water, fully soluble in alcohol, essential oils and slightly in warmed vegetable oil (from approx. 42 °C).
  • Dosage: typically 0.5–2 % in products, in balms or gels – according to the desired cooling effect.
  • Incorporation phase: add to the oil/alcohol phase at a temperature of approximately 45–50 °C, mix well, then cool.
  • Thermal stability: melts at approx. 42–44 °C, therefore store in a cool and dark place, avoid high temperatures (> 40 °C) before application.

Safety level of the raw material according toEWG: 1 (low risk)

Menthol is an ideal raw material for creating cooling and refreshing cosmetic formulations that provide an immediate feeling of relief during hot days or in case of muscle tension.

FAQ – Menthol, large crystals

How to properly dissolve menthol crystals?
Menthol melts already at a temperature of around 42–44 °C. The easiest way to dissolve it is in alcohol, in a small amount of vegetable oil after heating, or directly in essential oils. It does not dissolve in the water phase, so always incorporate it into the oil or alcohol component.

What is the recommended dosage of menthol in cosmetics?
It is commonly used at concentrations of 0.5–2 %. In lip balms and body gels lower doses are used, while in cooling sports products or massage oils higher doses are used. Higher concentrations may irritate the skin.

Is menthol also suitable for lip products?
Yes, it is often used in lip balms for a fresh cooling sensation. The recommended concentration is up to 1 % to avoid excessive irritation.

How will menthol affect the fragrance of the product?
It provides a fresh, typical mint aroma. At lower concentrations it only enhances the freshness, at higher doses it strongly dominates.

Can I use menthol directly on the skin?
No, crystals should never be applied directly to the skin. Always dissolve them first in a carrier oil or alcohol and use only at the recommended concentrations.

How to store menthol crystals?
Store them in a well-closed container, in a cool and dark place. At higher temperatures they may sublimate (evaporate) and lose intensity.
