The solvents category includes raw materials that facilitate the dissolution of actives, fragrance components and colorants, improve the dispersion and transport of substances in the aqueous or oil phase and help achieve a homogeneous, stable texture. A correctly chosen solvent improves sensorial properties, absorption and the overall usability of the product.
The range includes polyols (humectants with a solvent effect), glycols for fragrances and actives, alcohol-based solvents for fast-drying products, oil-based solvents/emollient carriers for lipophilic substances and solubilizers for clear incorporation of fragrances and essential oils into the aqueous phase.
Practical tip: choose the solvent according to the nature of the substance to be dissolved (hydrophilic vs. lipophilic), the target pH and the desired final skin feel (dry slip vs. hydrating effect). For fragrances in aqueous products, prefer solubilizers over classic solvents.
Vegetable Glycerin 99.5 % and Pentylene Glycol ECO improve dissolution in the aqueous phase and also provide a humectant benefit. Dissolution in the aqueous phase and at the same time increased hydration without stickiness at proper dosage. Glycerin is suitable for toners, serums and creams; Pentylene Glycol ECO also works as a preservation “booster”.
Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) is a proven solvent for fragrance blends and some more difficult-to-dissolve actives; it helps stabilize the fragrance and improves dispersion in emulsions and gel systems. Excellent choice for fragrance applications and even fragrance release without haze. Suitable for body lotions, gels and diffusers (depending on the product type).
Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA 99 %) is used in preparations with rapid evaporation and in technical steps of manufacturing or sanitation. Fast drying, degreasing effect and low residual level in the formula. In cosmetics, use it judiciously and in accordance with safety rules.
Isopropyl Myristate (IPM 98 %) is a light lipophilic carrier for dissolving oil-based actives and fragrances into the oil phase; at the same time it reduces greasy feel and improves slip. Dry skin feel and excellent spreadability without a heavy film. Suitable for body oils, dry oils and creams with a richer oil phase.
Symbio Solv Clear Plus and Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate enable clear incorporation of essential and fragrance oils into the aqueous phase or low-fat gels. Stable, clear fragrance solutions without haze and phase separation. An overview of parameters and dosage can be found with the respective products.
For fragrances and essential oils in the aqueous phase. A solubilizer creates a clear solution without haze and separation, whereas a solvent alone would cause milkiness or the oil floating on the surface.
Follow the solubility of the active: hydrophilic substances prefer aqueous solvents (glycerin, glycols), lipophilic actives and perfumes prefer oil-based carriers (IPM) or a solubilizer if the final product is to be aqueous.
Yes. Glycerin increases hydration, but at higher dosages it can increase stickiness; Pentylene Glycol has lower stickiness and also acts as a preservative “booster”. Adjust the dosage according to the target and sensorial tests.
No. IPA is a fast-drying alcohol with a degreasing effect; use it in a targeted way (e.g. sprays, local cleansing solutions) and always respect safety and regulatory requirements.
