Macerates and extracts

The Macerates and Extracts category includes oil-based plant extracts and functional extracts that transfer bioactive substances, colorants and flavors into cosmetic formulations. They are used in skin, body and hair care as regenerating, softening and antioxidant ingredients.

Oil macerates are created by leaching plants in vegetable oils, thus enriching the fatty phase of emulsions and oil formulations. Specific extracts, such as fermented rice water suitable for the aqueous phase, are also available. Further basic raw materials for formulation can be found in the Basic Raw Materials category.

Arnica (oil macerate)

A macerate containing botanicals traditionally used in the care of stressed skin and topical massage. It promotes skin comfort and improves both the stability and sensory properties of emulsions and balms. Please refer to Arnika for details and available packaging.

Chamomile (oil macerate)

A gentle macerate suitable for sensitive skin, baby and soothing care; popular in creams and body lotions. Soothes and softens, increases comfort on application. See Chamomile product for more information.

Chamomile (oil macerate)

Carotene (oil macerate)

Macerate rich in carotenoids to promote radiant appearance and antioxidant protection; suitable for use in day creams and body oils. Adds a subtle warm tinge and acts as an antioxidant. See Carotene for more information.

Fermented rice water (extract)

An aqueous, fermented raw material for skin and hair care; suitable for toners, serums, shampoos or conditioners. Promotes hydration, smoothness of the hair shaft and overall skin condition. Please refer to the Fermented Rice Water product for details.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a macerate and an extract?

A macerate is a vegetable extract in oil (to the fat phase), while an extract can be in water, glycerin or another base (to the water phase). There is also a difference in concentration and compatibility with the formulation.

How to dose oil macerates in creams and balms?

Normally 1-10% depending on the type of macerate and the formulation goal; in ointment bases even more. For sensitive skin, start at the lower limit of dosage.

Where to include fermented rice water in the formula?

It is an aqueous raw material - it belongs in the aqueous phase of tonics, serums or emulsions. It is important to treat with a preservative and pH according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Can I combine macerates with essential oils?

Yes, in low doses and taking into account dermal safety. Essential oils are added to the fat phase or to the cooling emulsion at the appropriate temperature.

How to store macerates and extracts?

Store oil macerates in a dark and cool place, well sealed; protect aqueous extracts from light and heat and use a preservative in finished products.
