The Macerates and Extracts category includes oil-based plant extracts and functional extracts that transfer bioactive substances, colorants and flavors into cosmetic formulations. They are used in skin, body and hair care as regenerating, softening and antioxidant ingredients.
Oil macerates are created by leaching plants in vegetable oils, thus enriching the fatty phase of emulsions and oil formulations. A macerate is a vegetable extract in oil (to the fat phase), while an extract can be in water, glycerin or another base (to the water phase). There is also a difference in concentration and compatibility with the formulation.
