Product description

L-arginine is a water-soluble amino acid that is used in cosmetic and technical formulations mainly as an auxiliary functional ingredient, humectant and pH regulator. It is a basic amino acid naturally present in the proteins of living organisms; in industrial production it is usually obtained by fermentation of carbohydrate raw materials using selected microorganisms, then it is purified, crystallised, dried and processed into a fine powder.
In cosmetic manufacturing, L-arginine is valued especially for its ability to increase the pH of acidic formulas, support the comfort of aqueous formulations and complement the amino acid profile of products intended for the care of the skin, hair and scalp.

Key benefits

  • Water-soluble amino acid suitable for the water phase of cosmetic formulations.
  • Regulates pH – used mainly to gently increase pH in acidic formulas.
  • Humectant ingredient that supports water binding in the superficial layers of the skin.
  • Supports skin comfort in products intended for hydration, regeneration and after-cleansing care.
  • Suitable for hair care products, especially shampoos, conditioners, hair tonics and scalp care products.
  • Good compatibility with aqueous systems, hydrolats, gels, emulsions and mild surfactant-based formulas.
  • Auxiliary ingredient in acid-based cosmetics, where it can be used to adjust pH in formulations with AHA, PHA or other acidic active substances.
  • Practical raw material for formulators who need to work with pH more precisely and gently than when using strong alkalis.

Suitable for products such as

  • hydrating serums and facial gels,
  • facial toners and watery essences,
  • creams and emulsions with a water phase,
  • shampoos, shower gels and mild cleansing products,
  • conditioners, hair masks and leave-in hair products,
  • scalp care products, hair lotions and tonics,
  • acid-based cosmetics where pH adjustment is required,
  • soothing and hydrating formulas after facial cleansing,
  • development and test formulations where precise pH setting is monitored.

Use in formulation

  • L-arginine is soluble in water and is incorporated into the water phase or into a pre-prepared aqueous premix.
  • It is miscible with water, hydrolats, hydrating agents, gelling agents, emulsions, mild surfactant systems and various water-soluble cosmetic actives.
  • It is not suitable for direct incorporation into purely oily blends, because it is practically insoluble in oils.
  • When adjusting pH, add it gradually in small amounts, mix the formula thoroughly and always check the pH continuously with a calibrated pH meter or suitable test strips.
  • In formulas containing acids, L-arginine can partially neutralise acidic components and thus increase pH; at the same time, it can affect the final efficacy and tolerability of the acid product.
  • It is compatible with many hydrating and aqueous cosmetic systems, but for more complex formulas it is advisable to prepare a small trial batch and monitor stability, pH, odour, colour and viscosity.
  • It is recommended to add it during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).
  • For products with a preservation system, always verify that the final pH remains within the range recommended for the preservative used.
  • In common cosmetic formulas it is used at low inclusion levels according to the intended purpose; when adjusting pH, the dosage is determined not only as a percentage, but according to the measured pH value of the finished formula.

Safety and storage

  • Store in a well-closed container, in a dry and cool place, away from direct sunlight and sources of moisture.
  • Protect from moisture, as powdered amino acids can form lumps when in contact with humidity.
  • When handling, avoid dust formation and inhalation of dust.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
  • When formulating, always check the final pH of the product, especially for products intended for the face, scalp or more sensitive areas.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dosage according to the type of formula and the desired effect.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

FAQ

Is L-arginine the same as arginine?

In cosmetic raw materials, the designation L-arginine is used for the biologically common L-form of the amino acid arginine. This is the form most commonly used in formulations.

Can L-arginine replace sodium hydroxide for pH adjustment?

In many cosmetic formulas, it can serve as a milder basic component to increase pH, especially in acidic systems. However, it is not always a direct replacement for sodium hydroxide, because it has different strength, solubility, impact on the formula and dosage.

Is L-arginine suitable for anhydrous balms?

In purely anhydrous oil-based balms, it is not suitable as a dissolved active ingredient, because it does not dissolve in oils. It can be used mainly in aqueous or emulsion products where a water phase is present.

Why is L-arginine often used in products with acids?

Products with acids often have a low pH that needs to be adjusted to a target value according to the type of acid, the purpose of the product and skin tolerance. L-arginine makes it possible to increase pH gradually while remaining part of the water phase.

Can L-arginine change the viscosity of a gel or shampoo?

Yes, it can indirectly affect viscosity because it changes the pH of the formula. Some gelling agents, thickeners and surfactant systems respond to a change in pH with a change in thickness, clarity or overall stability.

Is it necessary to measure pH when using L-arginine?

Yes, when using L-arginine for pH adjustment, measurement is essential. Without pH control, it is not possible to reliably determine whether the resulting formula is suitable for the skin, the preservation system and the actives used.
