Product description

A small roll-on for your own aromatherapy blends, perfume oils or spot serums. The 5 ml amber glass medicine bottle with a metal roller ball and a black plastic cap is intended for small quantities of liquid preparations applied directly to the skin: blends of essential oils in a carrier oil for the temples or wrists, perfume oils, spot serums or samples of fragrance compositions. Amber glass limits light exposure, so light-sensitive contents keep in better condition for longer than in a clear bottle.

The set consists of three parts: a glass bottle, a metal roller ball fitted in a plastic socket, and a screw cap. After filling, the roller ball is pressed onto the neck of the bottle and the cap is screwed on over it. All three components are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. The set is not intended for food.

How to use a roll-on bottle

As the roller ball moves over the skin, it picks up a thin layer of the contents and spreads it. Only a small amount reaches the skin, which suits more concentrated blends where only a few drops are used. The roll-on is built for liquid to slightly thick contents: oils, oil serums, perfume and alcohol-based solutions. A thick cream or gel will not pass through the roller ball; for such a recipe, a jar or a bottle with a dropper is more suitable.

Filling is done as follows:

  • Washing and disinfection – before first use, wash the bottle, cap and roller ball, disinfect them with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and leave them to dry completely.
  • Filling – pour the contents into the bottle without the roller ball fitted, ideally through a small funnel or with a dropper.
  • Fitting the roller ball – press the socket with the roller ball evenly onto the neck until it snaps into place, then screw on the cap.

The bottle is filled up to the nominal volume of 5 ml, not to the brim. The roller ball, which is pushed into the neck when fitted, needs space above the liquid level. An overfilled bottle pushes part of the contents out when the ball is pressed in.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The total brim volume is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between them forms a reserve for the roller ball and the cap, and also space for the contents to expand with changes in temperature, for example when you carry the roll-on in a handbag or a pocket.

What it is suitable for

  • Aromatherapy roll-ons – essential oils diluted in jojoba, almond or fractionated coconut oil, for the temples, neck or wrists.
  • Perfume oils – alcohol-free, oil-based perfumes, where the small volume matches the rate of use.
  • Spot treatments – an oil or alcohol-based serum for local application. The roller ball applies it precisely and without your fingers touching the contents.
  • Samples and testers – a volume of 5 ml makes it possible to hand out a fragrance or serum to try without a large loss of raw material.

Good to know

The glass withstands disinfection with alcohol and hot water. The socket of the roller ball and the cap are made of polypropylene, and the roller ball is made of steel. If your own recipe contains a higher proportion of essential oils or alcohol, we recommend checking the tightness and the behaviour of the plastic parts with your specific contents, especially if you will carry the roll-on in a warm place.

With alcohol-based and water-alcohol contents, the roller ball may get stuck due to deposits if it is not used for a longer time. Before application, it is enough to shake the bottle briefly and roll the ball across your palm to loosen it.

After washing and disinfection, the bottle can be used again. The roller ball can be pulled out of the neck, but after repeated fitting it may sit more loosely, so for long-term use it is worth keeping a spare. The bottle has an 18/410 neck finish, so it can also be fitted with another closure with the same neck type from the Handymade range. When sorting waste, separate the glass from the plastic parts with the metal roller ball.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 5 ml roll-on bottle suitable for essential oils?
Yes, the amber glass roll-on bottle is used precisely for blends of essential oils in a carrier oil. Glass does not react with essential oils, and the dark colour limits the light that degrades oils over time. The socket of the roller ball and the cap are made of plastic, so with undiluted essential oils we recommend checking their behaviour with your specific blend.
How do I fill a roll-on bottle and how much does it hold?
It is filled up to the nominal volume of 5 ml, without the roller ball fitted, through a small funnel or with a dropper. The total volume up to the brim is larger, but the difference serves as a reserve for the roller ball and the cap. If the bottle is filled to the brim, part of the contents is pushed out when the roller ball is pressed in.
Can the roller ball be removed and the bottle reused?
Yes, the roller ball can be pulled out of the neck, and the bottle can be filled again after washing and disinfection. After repeated fitting, the socket of the roller ball may sit more loosely and seal less well. If you use the bottle over a long period, check after each fitting that the roller ball sits firmly and the contents do not leak.
Is the roll-on bottle suitable for water-based or alcohol-based contents?
The glass bottle withstands water-based, alcohol-based and oil-based contents. The roller ball spreads thin liquid solutions well. With water-based preparations, you need to consider preservation, as with any water-based product, and with alcohol-based ones the possible build-up of deposits on the roller ball. Thick creams and gels will not pass through the roller ball, so a roll-on is not suitable for them.
Is the 5 ml roll-on bottle set approved for contact with cosmetics?
Yes, the glass bottle, the plastic cap and the metal roller ball with its socket are all declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products. You will find the declaration of conformity with the product. The set is not intended for contact with food, so it should not be used for homemade oils, syrups or infusions for consumption.
