Product description

The amber glass medicine bottle with a roller ball applicator is designed for preparations applied in small amounts directly to the skin: perfume oils, diluted essential oil blends for the temples and wrists, oil serums for the eye area, or spot treatments for blemishes. Amber glass filters light and helps protect contents that are sensitive to oxidation, especially essential oils and unrefined vegetable oils. The kit has three parts – the bottle, the roller ball with its housing and the cap – so you only need to fill it and assemble it.

What the kit contains

  • Glass medicine bottle, 30 ml – amber glass of European origin, 18/410 neck finish.
  • Roller ball – a steel ball in a clear polypropylene (PP) housing. The housing is pressed into the neck of the bottle, and as the ball rolls over the skin it transfers the contents in a thin layer.
  • Plastic cap – a black PP cap that screws on over the ball and closes the bottle between uses.

What it is suitable for

The roller ball applicator dispenses the preparation without contact with your fingers and applies it exactly where it is needed. Thin to medium-viscosity liquids pass through the ball best.

  • Perfume oils – a fragrance composition diluted in jojoba oil (Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil) or in fractionated coconut oil (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride).
  • Aromatherapy blends – essential oils in a carrier oil for the temples, neck or wrists.
  • Oil serum for the eye area – while applying, the ball also gently massages the area under the eyes.
  • Spot treatments – cuticle oil or treatment of individual blemishes.

The ball does not spread thick gels and creams evenly and may get stuck. For very thin water-based or alcohol-based preparations, we recommend testing on a sample first to check that the contents do not leak around the ball.

Filling and assembly

Before the first filling, wash all three parts, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Pour the contents into the bottle once they have cooled to room temperature.

Fill up to the nominal volume of 30 ml, not to the brim. The nominal volume is the volume the packaging is designed for in normal filling. The brimful volume is the physical volume up to the neck, and you will find it in the parameters. The difference between them forms a reserve for the ball housing, which takes up part of the neck when pressed in and pushes the liquid level upwards.

Press the housing with the ball into the neck evenly, ideally with the palm of your hand, until it snaps into place around the whole circumference. Only then screw on the cap. If the housing sits crooked, the contents will seep out along the edge during the first use.

Good to know

The kit is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics. The glass medicine bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the plastic cap and the ball do not. The kit as a whole is therefore intended for cosmetics.

We recommend testing the compatibility of the plastic housing and cap with undiluted essential oils or with preparations containing a high proportion of alcohol on a sample before you fill an entire batch.

The roll-on can be refilled repeatedly. Carefully pry out the housing with the ball using a thin blunt tool and wash all parts separately. Pay attention to the ball, which retains residues of the previous contents in the housing. Then rinse the parts with alcohol and let them dry. If the ball stops rotating freely, it is usually caused by dried oil residues, which warm water with washing-up liquid will loosen.

When carrying the roll-on in a bag, keep the cap tightened and, if possible, keep it upright. Thin contents may seep around the ball if the bottle lies for a longer time.

If you want to use the bottle without the ball, you will find closures with the same neck type and ready-made combinations in the Handymade range. For a custom combination, we recommend checking the seal and the dispensing with your specific formulation. An empty, washed bottle goes into glass recycling; the cap and the ball housing go into plastics.

Frequently asked questions

Does the amber glass roll-on medicine bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass reduces the passage of light and slows down the changes in the contents that light causes, which is useful for essential oils and unrefined vegetable oils. The protection is not complete, however. For this reason, do not leave the roll-on in direct sunlight for long periods, for example on a windowsill or in a car, where it is exposed to heat as well as light.
How much fits into a 30 ml roll-on bottle?
The bottle is designed for 30 ml of contents, which is its nominal volume. The brimful volume is larger and you will find it in the parameters, but this reserve should be left empty. When pressed in, the ball housing takes up part of the neck and pushes the liquid level upwards. If you fill the bottle to the brim, some of the contents will spill out during assembly.
What preparations can be filled into a roll-on bottle?
Thin to medium-thick liquids that the ball transfers smoothly work best: perfume oils, diluted essential oil blends, oil serums and light fluids. Thick gels and creams are not dispensed evenly through the ball. For water-based or alcohol-based preparations with low viscosity, we recommend testing on a sample to check that the contents do not leak around the ball.
Can the roll-on bottle be reused?
Yes, you can refill the roll-on bottle repeatedly after washing it. Carefully pry out the housing with the ball, take all parts apart, wash them, rinse them with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and let them dry. Before refilling, check that the bottle is not cracked and that the ball rotates freely. If the housing cracks when removed or loses its elasticity, replace it with a new one.
Is the roll-on kit also suitable for food, for example oil tinctures?
No, the kit as a whole is intended for cosmetics. The glass medicine bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the plastic cap and the ball do not. The whole kit is declared suitable for cosmetic preparations, that is, perfume oils, serums or massage blends.
