The cotton wick is a practical aid for producing candles and waxes in smaller containers and packaging. Thanks to its natural cotton composition, it is stable during burning, conducts the melted wax well, and helps achieve even combustion. It is suitable for use in glass and tin containers, smaller jars, and decorative packaging intended for candles.
The cotton wick is ideal for hand-made candles in various types of bottles, jars, and pots where emphasis is placed on aesthetics, even burning, and a controlled flame. With the correct choice of container diameter, it ensures stable burning without excessive smoking and efficient use of wax inside the packaging.
The cotton wick is intended primarily for candles inside containers, jars, and pots, where it serves as a functional burning element. When choosing suitable packaging, it is important to take into account the container diameter, height, and wax type so that burning proceeds safely and evenly. After the candle has burned down, the packaging can then be used with other components – for example with closures, lids, or pumps for a new type of filling, provided these combinations are compatible in terms of material and use.
Combinations of packaging and closures that are created directly on Handymade are tested and functional. However, for all combinations we always recommend performing your own compatibility test (sealing, dosing, and the behavior of the packaging in contact with the specific formulation).
All technical parameters of the packaging are given in the attached packaging quality certificate and in the product parameters.
The wick length should correspond to the height of the wax filling in the container, with a reserve for fixing and possible trimming. When pouring the candle, we recommend leaving the wick longer, trimming it to approximately 5–7 mm after the first solidification of the wax, and then adjusting it according to the flame behavior. Always observe the burning in the specific packaging and carry out a test series to achieve even combustion without excessive smoking.
The cotton wick itself is intended for single use within one candle, but the packaging – the bottle, jar, or pot – can be reused if hygiene principles are observed. After the candle has burned down, remove the remaining wax, clean the packaging thoroughly, and always disinfect it before refilling, for example using IPA 99% isopropyl alcohol or 96% denatured plant-based ethanol. This will ensure a clean environment for the new filling and minimize the risk of unwanted reactions.
If you decide not to reuse the packaging after the candle has burned down, we recommend recycling it in accordance with the recommendation given in the parameter table for the specific product on the website. First remove any wax residues and the metal parts of the wick, mechanically clean the packaging, and then sort it according to the material type (glass, plastic, metal). Correct sorting ensures that the packaging can be recovered again in the recycling process.
With a new combination of wax, fragrance, and packaging, it is important to carry out a test pour in the actual container in which you plan to offer the candle. Observe the flame size, the formation of a carbon “mushroom” at the end of the wick, the rate of wax melt pool formation, and the temperature of the container walls. Always test several variants of wick length and container diameter to find the optimal setting for safe and stable burning.
To make selection easier, we recommend using the advanced filter, which you will find at the top of the page after clicking on a specific packaging category. In the advanced filter, you can conveniently combine several criteria – for example the neck type, size, color, or packaging material. This allows you to quickly find bottles, jars, or pots that will best match your candle formulation and visual concept.
